CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern picked up its first win of the season in the home opener on Tuesday night against South Carolina State, 25-21, 25-17, 25-13.
The Buccaneers improved to 1-7 on the season while South Carolina State fell to 0-3 following the loss.
CSU was led offensively by Rachel Smith with 29 assists while Madison Martin paved the way defensively with 14 digs. The Bucs led 15-10 in the first frame before the Bulldogs closed the gap and tied the score 18-18 following two straight kills from Alexus Holt off assists from Jenai King. The Bucs led 21-20 and then won four of the final five points of the set to record a 25-21 win in the first frame.
Charleston Southern and S.C. State had a back-and-forth second set that saw the teams tied 14-14 following a kill from the Bulldogs' Ashante Finnie off an assist from King. CSU then went on an 11-3 run and closed out the set on a serve by Smith that wasn't returned to give the Bucs a 25-17 win in the second frame.
The Buccaneers came out hot following the intermission and took a 16-9 lead after a kill from Hannah Western off an assist from Smith. The Bulldogs couldn't recover from there and CSU led 18-13 before scoring the final seven points to close out the match.
