CSU opens home season with visit from S.C. State

Charleston Southern opens its 2017 home schedule on Tuesday night at the Buccaneer Field House as the Bucs take on non-conference opponent South Carolina State. First serve between CSU and the Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m. on the Big South Network.

The Bucs (0-7) are seeking their first win of the season on Tuesday in the midweek matchup against South Carolina State (0-2). Charleston Southern returns to tournament action this weekend when it travels to play at the Elon Invitational starting on Friday evening against host Elon. CSU will play Norfolk State on Saturday morning before closing out the tournament against N.C. Central on Saturday afternoon.

Charleston Southern is coming off a 0-3 weekend at the UAB Blazer Invitational this past weekend. CSU dropped a 3-1 decision to UAB on Friday afternoon before falling 3-2 to Georgia State later that evening. The Bucs lost a 3-2 thriller to Western Illinois on Saturday to close out the weekend.

Junior libero Madison Martin continues to lead CSU defensively with 4.61 digs per set, while sophomore setter Rachel Smith ranks fourth in the Big South Conference in assists per set. Junior outside hitter Addison Kaderli is among the Big South leaders in service aces per set.

S.C. State is still looking for its first win of the season on Tuesday night after dropping a pair of season opening matches to host Charlotte (3-0) and Southern Utah (3-0) in the Charlotte Invitational (Aug. 25-26).

Freshman Jenai King was named to the All-Tournament Team averaging 6.5 assists per set with a total of 39 assists and 10 digs for the Bulldogs.

In honor of National Cheese Pizza Day, the Buccaneers will be giving away free pizza courtesy of Papa John's.
