BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Charleston Southern fell in five sets in the Buccaneers' tournament finale at the UAB Blazer Invitational as CSU was unable to keep pace with Western Illinois in the deciding fifth frame in falling 25-15, 17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-8.
Western Illinois improved to 3-1 on the season following the Saturday afternoon win, while the Buccaneers fell to 0-7 on the season following the first two weekends of play.
WIU limited CSU to a .029 hitting percentage in the first set as the Buccaneers struggled to connect in the opening frame. Hannah Western and Logan Windsor had three kills apiece in the frame, but the Leathernecks jumped out to an 18-10 lead on their way to cruising to the 25-15 set win.
The Bucs responded with one of their best sets of the season in the second frame as CSU evened the match with the 25-17 set win. Western led five players with double-digit kills in the frame while Madison Martin had eight digs as CSU hit .382 as a team. The Bucs went up 11-2 following a pair of Western kills and CSU held off a late WIU rally as Kylie Klein put in the final point to even the match at 1-1.
Western added four more kills and four digs to pace the Bucs in the third set as the teams battled through eight ties and two lead changes. The Bucs led 14-10 following an Addison Kaderli kill, but WIU rallied back to take the late lead following back-to-back blocks by Emilee Dechant. Shiah Sanders put in the final point for WIU to go up 2-1.
Nine ties and four lead changes in the fourth set gave way to Logan Windsor pacing CSU to the 25-22 set win. Windsor finished the frame with five kills and a .417 hitting percentage as the sophomore outside hitter helped CSU battle back from an 18-12 deficit on their way to taking the win.
WIU took the first four points in the fifth frame and never trailed the rest of the way in closing out the match.
Inside the Numbers
- Two Buccaneers (Logan Windsor & Hannah Western) recorded double-doubles in the match, while Rachel Smith narrowly missed out on one with 34 assists and nine digs.
- Windsor finished the match with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Western paced CSU with 14 kills and 12 digs.
- Madison Martin picked up a match-high 22 digs in the contest to lead the Bucs.
- Kylie Klein was the CSU leader at the net with three total blocks.
