CSU is coming off a 0-3 weekend at the Catamount Volleyball Classic this past weekend. The Bucs dropped a three-set decision to tournament host Western Carolina on Friday night and then fell twice on Saturday to Jacksonville State and Towson to close out the weekend.

Junior libero Madison Martin was named to the All-Tournament team after leading the Bucs' defensive efforts over the weekend opener. Martin averaged 5.09 digs per set and added a 28-dig match in the finale against Towson to highlight a strong opening weekend for the Preseason All-Conference selection.

Hannah Western (19 kills-25 digs) and Logan Windsor (10 kills-14 digs) both recorded double-doubles in Saturday's opening match against Jacksonville State. The duo paced the Bucs lineup throughout the weekend, while setter Rachel Smith added a pair of double-doubles.

College of Charleston went 2-1 over the Cougars' opening weekend at the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic held at TD Arena. The Cougars topped USC Upstate and Tennessee State while falling in a tough matchup against Denver in the tournament finale. CSU is the lone Big South team on the CofC schedule in 2017.

Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Freed earned CAA Player of the Week honors after averaging 4.36 kills and 3.73 digs per set to pace the Cougars over the weekend. Junior libero McKala Rhodes led the back line with 5.18 digs per set, while senior middle blocker Krissy Mummy averaged 3.27 kills and 1.73 blocks per set to pace CofC at the net.

Martin opened the weekend with a 20-dig effort in CSU's three-set loss on Friday night against Western Carolina. She added a 28-dig effort in the four-set loss to Towson.

CSU earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the fifth straight season as the Bucs posted a team GPA of 3.66 during the 2016-17 season. Rising senior middle blocker Kylie Klein was named the 2016-17 Big South Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Buccaneers were one of a record-setting 822 men's and women's volleyball teams (across all divisions), breaking the previous year's total of 764 to set an all-time high. The Bucs were one of five Big South programs on the list joining fellow members Campbell, Gardner-Webb, Liberty, and Radford among those recognized with the award.

The Buccaneers will be on the road a majority of August and September once again as CSU hits the tournament circuit this weekend. CSU will be away from the Buccaneer Field House for 14 of their first 16 matches as the Bucs travel to the Catamount Volleyball Classic, the UAB Blazer Invitational, the Phoenix Classic, and the Bulldog Invitational. The Bucs also will travel to College of Charleston (Aug. 29) and Presbyterian (Sept. 19) during the stretch. CSU's lone home games come on September 5 (S.C. State) and September 12 (Savannah State).

Madison Martin could become just the 10th Charleston Southern volleyball player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs this weekend as the Bucs prepare to open 2017 at the Catamount Volleyball Classic. The Birmingham, Mich. native enters the weekend with 990 career digs, sitting just 10 shy of achieving the career mark. Martin moved up four spaces into 10th all-time on the career digs list passing Rachel Deangelo (955, 2000-03), Katie O'Riordan (975, 2002-05), Emily Libertowski (976, 2007-10), and Allison Arreola (983, 1995-98) over the weekend.

The Bucs closed out the weekend with four double-doubles paced by a pair from Rachel Smith over the first two matches of the season.
