CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Charleston Southern landed the No. 5 seed in the Big South Conference Volleyball Championships as announced by the conference office on Saturday evening. The Bucs will take on No. 4 Campbell in the quarterfinal round held in the Vines Center on the campus of Liberty University on Friday, November 18, with first serve set for 4:30 p.m.
CSU advanced to the postseason for the second consecutive season after posting an 8-8 record in conference play. The Bucs' eight conference wins are the most since the 1986 season when CSU went a perfect 15-0 in conference action.
The Bucs split the regular season against Campbell with CSU picking up a five-set win at the Buccaneer Field House on October 1, while the Camels returned the favor with a five-set win in Gore Arena on October 29.
For the third time in four years, Radford University is the No. 1 seed in the Big South Volleyball Championship. The Highlanders finished with a 14-2 conference record to win the Big South regular-season title for a league-record 10th time.
Host Liberty and High Point tied for second in the standings at 11-5. The teams split the season series, and the Lady Flames received the No. 2 seed based on its percentage of sets won over the Panthers in their two meetings (4 sets to 3, 57.1 percent). Both Radford and Liberty earn byes into the semifinals as part of the new six-team championship format, and will open postseason play on Saturday, Nov. 19.
With High Point at the No. 3 seed, Campbell receives the No. 4 seed after finishing league play at 10-6. Charleston Southern landed the No. 5 seed following its 8-8 conference season, with UNC Asheville securing the sixth and final spot in the Championship. The Bulldogs tied with Winthrop for sixth in the standings at 6-10, but Asheville completed its season sweep of the Eagles on Saturday afternoon to qualify for the championship.
The 2016 Big South Volleyball Championship begins Friday, Nov. 18, with Campbell and Charleston Southern in the first quarterfinal match at 4:30pm, followed by High Point and UNC Asheville at 7:00pm. Saturday's semifinal schedule will begin with Radford against the winner of Campbell/Charleston Southern at 4:30pm, and concludes with Liberty vs. the High Point/UNC Asheville winner at 7:00pm. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be broadcast live for FREE on the Big South Network and on Roku, while Sunday's title match will be broadcast live on ESPN3 at 4:00pm. The Big South's Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Championship. The Championship schedule is as follows:
