VB Preview: Buccaneers return to Big South competition on Tuesday afternoon at UNC Asheville

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern continues Big South play on Tuesday afternoon as the Buccaneers travel to UNC Asheville for a midweek match in the Justice Center. The match was originally scheduled for October 8th but was moved to Tuesday due to the impact of Hurricane Matthew. Volleyball Match Notes - at UNC Asheville*

Scouting UNC Asheville
UNC Asheville snapped a four-match losing streak this past Tuesday with a 3-2 win on the road over Gardner-Webb. It was the first Big South win of the 2016 season for the Bulldogs as Asheville had previously fallen to Campbell, High Point, Liberty and Radford. Highlights from the Bulldogs' season so far include winning all three matches of the UNC Asheville Invitational (Sept. 9-10) with victories over N.C. Central, Stetson and Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs have also posted victories over Savannah State, Western Carolina, and Montreat. 

Cara Guthrie leads UNC Asheville on the season with 3.22 kills per set. Shelby Erickson (2.58), Madison Vaughn (2.24) and Ansley Rooks (2.15) all averaging multiple kills per set. Kailey Hackett (5.19 a/s) and Carter Kennedy (4.78 a/s) combine to set up the Asheville offense. Defensively, Madisen Zyburt is the team leader with 4.13 digs per set. Vaughn leads the Bulldogs at the net with 0.79 blocks per set.

Last Season against UNC Asheville - October 13, 2015
Charleston Southern fell in five sets in the teams' only match of the 2015 season. The Bucs dropped a 15-25, 26-24, 25-23, 14-25, 15-13 decision in the Buccaneer Field House despite Meredith Parrott notching a career milestone in the match. The now-graduated senior middle blocker eclipsed 1,000 career kills in the match, while Addison Kaderli paced CSU with 19 kills and 21 digs overall from the floor.

Last Time out for CSU - Five-Set Thriller Win In Home Opener
Connor Malone and Kylie Klein sparked Charleston Southern in the deciding fifth set as the Buccaneers bounced back after dropping the third and fourth sets to top Campbell in the Buccaneer Field House. The Bucs improved to 3-0 in Big South Conference play following the 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 18-25, 15-13, win over the Camels. Malone saved her best for the fifth set with the redshirt senior right side hitter connecting on four kills, including the final two points for the Bucs, in leading CSU to the 15-13 set win. Klein gave the Bucs the lead with a stretch that included a kill and back-to-back service aces to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 advantage. CSU never trailed the remainder of the set in closing out the win.

Bucs against UNC Asheville under Mooberry
CSU is 1-2 against UNC Asheville under Head Coach Christy Mooberry. The Bucs picked up their victory at the Justice Center in the 2014 season behind a blistering attack by Parrott. The middle blocker recorded 20 kills in 28 attacks, hitting .607 from the floor in the match to lead CSU to the 3-1 win over the Bulldogs. CSU's losses have both come in Buccaneer Field House with the Bucs losing in five sets in both 2013 and 2015.

Bucs and UNC Asheville against Common Opponents
Charleston Southern and UNC Asheville have faced off against two common opponents in the 2016 season. The Bucs and the Bulldogs both faced off against Savannah State and Campbell. CSU is 4-0 against the common opponents with three wins over SSU and a home win over the Camels. Asheville is 1-1 against the same opposition with a 3-0 win over Savannah State and a 3-0 loss on the road at Campbell. 

Scheduling Changes following Hurricane Matthew
Charleston Southern has already rescheduled two of the three matches that were postponed due to Hurricane Matthew. The matched was originally scheduled for this past week, but due to the impact of Hurricane Matthew on the Lowcountry, CSU suspended all athletic games due to student safety in advance of the oncoming storm system. 

October 4 – vs. Presbyterian – Postponed
October 7 – at High Point – Rescheduled for October 28 – 7 p.m.
October 8 – at UNC Asheville – Rescheduled for October 11 – 4 p.m.

CSU is 3-0 in Big South Conference Play
You have to dig back into the record books to find the last time the Buccaneers opened Big South Conference play with back-to-back wins. CSU previously started conference play with a 3-0 record back in the 1988 season under Hall of Fame coach Amir Khaledi. CSU opened the season with a pair of home wins against Coastal Carolina and Radford on their way to posting a 5-1 record in conference play on the year. CSU went on to win the Big South regular season and tournament championships in the 1988 season. 

Big South Players of the Week
Charleston Southern has been well-decorated by the Big South Conference in the 2016 season with three Buccaneers receiving weekly honors by the conference office. Madison Martin (Defensive) and Brooke Monssen (Freshman) both received honors after leading CSU at the Bash in the Boro hosted by Georgia Southern. Rachel Smith joined the duo, earning Big South Freshman of the Week honors on September 26 after leading the Bucs to back-to-back Big South wins over Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian.

Chasing the NCAA Leaders
As a team, CSU sits among the national leaders in four separate categories on the 2016 season. The Bucs are 21st in digs per set at 16.77, 25th in team digs with 1,241, 34th in team service aces with 110 and 35th in team total attacks with 2,709.
