CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern opens its 2016 home schedule on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers host Campbell in the Buccaneer Field House. It is CSU's first home match of the 2016 season after opening the year with 18 straight road matches. Campbell enters the weekend with a 6-10 overall record, 1-1 in Big South Conference play on the season. The Fighting Camels topped UNC Asheville in their conference opener this past Friday in Buies Creek, 3-0. Campbell fell to Radford in the following match on Saturday in four sets. The Camels have posted wins over Mercer, Columbia, San Francisco, South Carolina State and North Carolina A&T on the season.
Loni Kreun leads Campbell's attack on the season with 2.57 kills per set, while Allena Heath (2.05) is also averaging multiple kills. Jenny Tait returns as the Camels hitting leader with a .360 hitting percentage from the floor. Summer Schuitema (6.07) and Rebecca Ramirez (3.43) both set up the CU offense. Defensively, Kayla Schanback is the team leader with 4.26 digs per set. At the net, Tait is the blocking leader with 1.08 blocks per set.
Last Season against Campbell
Charleston Southern fell in both regular season matches against Campbell in the 2015 season. The Camels topped the Bucs in the Buccaneer Field House on October 13, 3-1. CSU fell in the rematch on November 14 in Gore Arena in straight sets, 3-0. In the first matchup, the Bucs battled through the first set, holding set point twice in the opening frame before taking the opening frame. However, the Camels never trailed in the second and fourth sets and used a late 6-0 run to take the third set in closing out the Big South win. In the second matchup, Addison Kaderli and Katrina Houston had eight kills apiece in CSU's loss.
Bucs against Campbell under Mooberry
CSU is 0-6 against Campbell under Head Coach Christy Mooberry. The Bucs are still searching for their first win over the Fighting Camels in the Mooberry era. CSU recorded its last win over Campbell at the end of the 2012 season when CSU topped the Camels in straight sets, 3-0, on November 10.
Bucs and Campbell against Common Opponents
Charleston Southern and Campbell have faced off against two common opponents in the 2016 season in Elon and S.C. State. Both teams fell in their matchup against Elon, while CSU and Campbell both defeated S.C. State. The Bucs fell in their matchup to the Phoenix at the Bulldog Invitational, while Campbell fell to Elon at the Charlotte Invitational. CSU topped S.C. State in a midweek matchup in straight sets, while the Camels defeated the Bulldogs at the Campbell Invitational.
CSU is 2-0 in Big South Conference Play
You have to dig back into the record books to find the last time the Buccaneers opened Big South Conference play with back-to-back wins. CSU previously started conference play with a 2-0 record back in the 1988 season under Hall of Fame coach Amir Khaledi. CSU opened the season with a pair of home wins against Coastal Carolina and Radford on their way to posting a 5-1 record in conference play on the year. CSU went on to win the Big South regular season and tournament championships in the 1988 season.
Big South Freshman of the Week (Sept. 25)
Charleston Southern freshman setter Rachel Smith became the second CSU freshman to earn Big South Volleyball Freshman of the Week honors this season after leading the Bucs to a 2-0 record to open conference play with wins over Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian. Smith joined teammate Brooke Monssen (Sept. 6) in earning the honor after recording
double-doubles in each of the Big South contests with 33 assists and 12 digs against the Blue Hose and 34 assists and 19 digs against the Runnin' Bulldogs. She also added three service aces and four blocks on the week.

Chasing the NCAA Leaders
Charleston Southern boasts two players ranked among the tops in the nation in junior middle blocker Kylie Klein and sophomore libero Madison Martin. Klein leads the Big South and is eighth overall in the NCAA Division I volleyball rankings in total blocks on the season with 80. Martin leads the Big South and enters the weekend ranked 12th in the NCAA in total digs with 315. It's the second straight week the Buccaneers duo have been ranked among the statistical leaders with both players sitting fifth overall in the categories from September 18-24.
As a team, CSU is in the top 10 in the NCAA leaderboard in four separate categories. The Bucs are second in the NCAA in total attacks with 2,522, third in team digs with 1,150, eighth in service aces with 105, and 10th in total blocks with 164.0.
