Volleyball Preview: Buccaneers continue Big South road schedule at Gardner-Webb

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern continues its season-opening Big South Conference road trip as the Buccaneers travel to Paul Porter Arena and Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardner-Webb. Scouting Gardner-Webb
Gardner-Webb enters the Big South matchup with a 9-5 overall record, 1-0 in Big South Conference play on the season. GWU went on a five-match winning streak from August 30-September 10 as the Runnin' Bulldogs. GWU topped USC Upstate, Limestone, S.C. State, Delaware State, and Norfolk State during the span. Gardner-Webb topped Winthrop in their Big South opener this past Tuesday in straight sets, 3-0. 

Taylor Lillard leads GWU with 2.63 kills per set, while Nicole Celarek is averaging 2.00 kills per set on the season. Hannah Driscoll is the team's hitting leader with a .291 hitting percentage. Amanda Sahm (5.61) and Tinsley Fain (4.14) both set up the GWU offense on the season. Emma Milstead is the GWU digs leader with 5.25 per set, while Kaelyn Dyson (0.89) is the team's blocking leader. 

Last Season against Gardner-Webb
Charleston Southern won its lone matchup against Gardner-Webb in the 2015 season with the Buccaneers topping the Runnin' Bulldogs in the Buc Dome on October 24, 3-1. The victory sparked a four-match winning streak for the Buccaneers with CSU topping Presbyterian, Winthrop and The Citadel over the stretch. 

Charleston Southern took control early against Gardner-Webb and the Buccaneers did not let up the rest of the way as CSU topped the visiting Runnin' Bulldogs in four sets, 25-20, 25-19, 14-25, 25-22. Katrina Houston leading three players in double-digits with 15 kills in the match. Meredith Parrott and Kylie Klein both added 12 kills apiece in the win. 

Last Match for Charleston Southern
Addison Kaderli and Charleston Southern volleyball opened Big South Conference play with 3-1 win over Presbyterian on Tuesday night in the Templeton Center as the Buccaneers topped the Blue Hose 27-25, 16-25, 25-19, 25-16. Kaderli led the way for CSU with 17 kills and 16 digs as the Bucs hit .190 as a team from the floor in the Big South opener for both teams. It was the first time CSU volleyball won its conference opener since the 2009 season when the Bucs topped the Blue Hose at home in straight sets. 

Hannah Western added nine kills and six digs from the floor as the Bucs rallied from a first set deficit while taking control early in both the third and fourth set wins. Rachel Smith set up the CSU offense with 33 assists and added 11 digs. Madison Martin (11) and Taylor Allman (10) were also in double-digits in the digs category. Caitlyn Michalski, Kaderli, and Connor Malone all finished with three blocks apiece.

Bucs against Gardner-Webb under Mooberry
CSU is 1-2 against Gardner-Webb under Head Coach Christy Mooberry. The Bucs picked up their first win against the Runnin' Bulldogs last season in the Buc Dome as CSU topped GWU, 3-1, on October 24.

Bucs and Gardner-Webb against Common Opponents
Charleston Southern and Presbyterian have faced off against two common opponents in the 2016 season. The Bucs and the Runnin' Bulldogs both faced off against S.C. State and The Citadel during the pre-conference schedule. CSU topped S.C. State in Orangeburg, S.C. on August 30, 3-0. The Bucs fell to The Citadel twice, both at the Bash in the Boro and at the Bulldog Invitational. Gardner-Webb is 1-1 against common opponents with a win over S.C. State and a five-set loss to The Citadel.
