Volleyball Preview: Buccaneers travel to Bulldog Invitational to wrap up tournament season

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern continues its road trip to open the 2016 season as the Buccaneers make the short trip to local rival The Citadel for the Bulldog Invitational this weekend. CSU will take on Austin Peay, Savannah State, Elon and The Citadel over the two-day event in McAlister Field House. Charleston Southern's match against The Citadel on Saturday evening will streamed live on ESPN3. First serve between the Bucs and the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.

Scouting the Tournament Field
Austin Peay
Austin Peay enters the weekend with a 5-6 overall record on the season. The Governors have fallen in their past two matches with losses to Dayton and Saint Louis. APSU has topped Troy, USC Upstate, Southern University, Evansville and Kent State. Ashley Slay leads the Govers with 2.72 kills per set. Kaylee Taft (2.36 kps) is the team's leader with a .302 hitting percentage. Kristen Stucker sets up the Governors' offense with 9.17 assists per set. Ginny Gerig is the digs leader with 2.92 per set, while Slay is the blocks leader with 1.22 per set. 

Charleston Southern
Charleston Southern enters the weekend coming off of a win over Savannah State on Tuesday night. The Buccaneers are 4-8 overall on the season with wins over S.C. State, Savannah State (twice) and Jacksonville State. The Bucs are 2-1 on the season against the current tournament field with the lone loss coming against The Citadel on September 2 at the Bash in the Boro. Brooke Monssen leads the Bucs with 2.72 kills per set, while Kylie Klein is the hitting leader at .249. Rachel Smith sets up the CSU offense with 6.96 assists per set. Defensively, Madison Martin is the digs leader with 4.49. Kylie Klein is the Bucs' blocking leader at 1.21 per game 

Elon enters the weekend on a seven-match winning streak and boasts the best record of the tournament field with a 10-2 mark through the first 12 matches. The Phoenix have topped Big South opponents Campbell and Gardner-Webb, but fell to High Point on September 3 for one of their two losses on the season. Kam Terry leads the Phoenix offense with 3.68 kills per set. Elizabeth Coil is the team leader with a .364 hitting percentage. Sydel Curry sets up the Elon offense with 10.56 assists per set. Defensively, Maddie Jaudon is the team leader with 4.60 digs per set. Ally Karle is the team leader with 1.40 blocks per set.

Savannah State
Savannah State enters the weekend with a 0-12 record on the season. The Lady Tigers have struggled on the season with SSU winning three sets overall. Savannah State took points against both Georgia Southern, Troy and Charleston Southern on the year. The Bucs are currently 2-0 against Savannah State on the year. Dominique Ingram leads the Lady Tigers with 2.00 kills per set and a .226 hitting percentage. Alee Quint sets up the SSU offense with 4.69 assists per set. Defensively, Alexis Washington is the digs leader with 3.28 per set. Ingram is the blocking leader with 0.72 per set.

The Citadel
The Citadel enters the weekend on a five-match skid since the end of the Bash in the Boro hosted by Georgia Southern. The Bulldogs fell in all four matches at last weekend's Fullerton Classic. The Citadel topped Big South opponents Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern in five-set matches earlier in the year. Moriah Smith continues to lead the Bulldogs with 4.69 kills per set on the season. Sarah Dobrich is the hitting leader with a .214 hitting percentage. Logan Smith sets up the Bulldogs' offense with 8.29 assists set. Samantha Espy leads the Bulldogs backline efforts with 4.51 digs per set. Dobrich is the blocking leader at 0.53 blocks per set.
