ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Charleston Southern swept host South Carolina State on Tuesday night inside Dukes Gymnasium as the Buccaneers downed the Bulldogs in three sets, 25-13, 25-23, 25-9.
Brooke Monssen continued a strong start to her freshman season with 14 kills and three blocks as the Bucs (1-3) dominated at the net with a .298 team hitting percentage. Western added eight kills and four digs for CSU as the Bucs trailed only once in the three sets against S.C. State on the night.
Charleston Southern remains on the road this week as the Bucs travel to the Bash in the Boro hosted by Georgia Southern on September 1-2. The Bucs will take on Savannah State, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State and The Citadel over the two-day event.
CSU jumped ahead in the first set as Caitlyn Michalski and Monssen both had early kills among the first four points. The Bucs broke an 8-7 set with an 9-2 run sparked by a Monssen and Kylie Klein block. Macey LaPorte added a service ace during the stretch as CSU took control on their way to winning the set, 25-13.
The Bucs took four of the first five points in the second set in building the early advantage. The Bulldogs rallied back and kept the set close with SCSU taking their lone lead of the evening midway through the set. SCSU went on a 4-0 run capped by a Jaime Jacobs' kill in taking a 16-15 lead. CSU responded with five straight points on their way to retaking the lead in winning the 25-23 set.
CSU led from start to finish and rattled off 13 straight points in closing out the sweep.
S.C. State (0-5) was led by Brianna Dafney's eight kills, while Marcella Chestnut added six kills and four digs in the loss.
