Volleyball Preview: Bucs host The Citadel in midweek non-conference match

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern hosts The Citadel on Tuesday night in their final non-conference matchup of the season. First serve between the Bucs and Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.

Match Notes vs. The Citadel

Scouting The Citadel
The Citadel enters the Tuesday night matchup with a 7-21 overall record on the season and 2-7 record away from the McAlister Field House on the year. The Bulldogs have posted road wins over Gardner-Webb and Savannah State on the season, but enter the match on a skid having lost in 11 of their past 12 matches. The Bulldogs took the first match against CSU earlier this season on September 12, 3-2. 

Moriah Smith leads the Bulldogs with 3.17 kills per set, while Megan Sowell (2.89) and Bailey Kernodle (2.36) are also averaging multiple kills per set. Rachel Keefer sets up the Bulldogs offense with 8.46 assists per set. Defensively, Samantha Espy is the digs leader with 4.36 digs per set, while Zuri Fenderson is the leader at the net with 0.71 blocks per set. 

Previously against The Citadel
Charleston Southern fell in five sets on the road at crosstown rival The Citadel on Tuesday night, dropping 21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 17-25, 17-15, inside the McAlister Field House. The Buccaneers rallied from an 8-5 deficit in the fifth set to take a 13-11 lead, utilizing a trio of blocks from Connor Malone during the stretch. The Citadel responded with three straight points to get to match point. Despite a pair of Addison Kaderli kills, the Bulldogs rallied to take the final frame and the win. Kaderli led the Bucs with a team-high 15 kills in the match as the Buccaneers connected at a .178 clip from the floor. Meredith Parrott and Krista Kuglin had 13 kills apiece, while Cassidy Greer had 37 assists in setting up the CSU offense. Ashley Higginbothem led the Bucs defensive efforts with 26 digs, while Malone led the Bucs at the net with six blocks.

Bucs against The Citadel under Mooberry
CSU Head Coach Christy Mooberry is 2-1 lifetime against The Citadel during her tenure at Charleston Southern with the Bucs topping the Bulldogs twice, 3-1, at McAlister Field House. The Bucs won in four sets in 2014 at The Citadel Invitational. CSU also topped the Bulldogs 3-1 in the 2013 Citadel Invitational. CSU fell to the Bulldogs earlier this season on September 15, 3-2.

Buccaneers in Non-Conference Play
Charleston Southern posted a 5-12 overall record in non-conference play this season with the Bucs topping Savannah State (twice), N.C. Central, Elon and S.C. State.

Recapping the Weekend
Redshirt senior libero Ashley Higginbothem set a new CSU single season digs record this past weekend, eclipsing former CSU all-time great Carrie O'Connell on Saturday against Winthrop.

Freshman Addison Kaderli continues to impress as the Austin, Texas native had arguably the best weekend of her collegiate career in CSU wins over PC and Winthrop. Kaderli averaged 3.43 kills per set and 5.86 digs per set, including a career-high 25 digs in the Bucs' four-set win over Winthrop.

Junior outside hitter Connor Malone had a match for the ages in CSU's sweep over Presbyterian. Malone hit .579 from the floor with a team-high 11 kills as the Bucs split the season series with the Blue Hose.

Meredith Parrott connected at a .314 clip with 3.43 kills per set and 1.00 blocks per set over the two CSU wins over Presbyterian and Winthrop.

Big South Defensive Player of the Week
Charleston Southern's Addison Kaderli was named the Big South Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week this past week for her performances in CSU's wins over Presbyterian and Winthrop, as announced by the conference office this afternoon. Kaderli tied for the team lead with 3.43 kills per set and recorded a career-high and season-best 5.86 digs per set as the freshman outside hitter continues to display her all-around game on the court. She had 16 digs in CSU's three set win over Presbyterian, then added a season-high 25 digs in the Bucs' four-set win over Winthrop.
