ROCK HILL, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell in three sets to host Winthrop on Saturday afternoon inside the Winthrop Coliseum in a tightly contested match as the Buccaneers fell to the Eagles in Big South Conference play, 25-21, 25-20, 26-24.
Katrina Houston had a team-high 10 kills in the match as the Bucs (4-14, 0-2) hit .126 from the floor over the three sets in the loss. Kylie Klein and Addison Kaderli had six kills apiece, while Cassidy Greer set up the offense with 18 assists from the floor. Ashley Higginbothem led the Bucs and finished the match with 13 digs, while Klein finished the match with six blocks in pacing CSU at the net.
Rachel Lenz led the Eagles with 13 kills, while Lourdes Rosario was also in double-digits with 10 as the Eagles (5-11, 1-1) picked up their first Big South win of the season. Madilyn McCarty set up the offense with 39 assists, while Carlie Skelton was the defensive leader with 12 digs.
Charleston Southern returns home to the Buc Dome for the first time in a month next weekend as CSU hosts Campbell on Friday night. First serve between the Big South opponents is set for 7 p.m.
CSU took the first three points of the opening set and held the 7-6 lead early in the frame following a Winthrop service error. The Eagles rallied back and held a five point lead late in the set at 23-18 following a Keaupono kill on their way to taking the 25-21 set win.
The Bucs fought to keep the second set close, trailing 20-17 following back-to-back kills from Katrina Houston and Addison Kaderli. However, Winthrop took five of the next eight points in building the 2-0 lead.
CSU took the 21-18 lead late in the third set on Houston's 10th kill of the match before Winthrop rallied back to hold match point. The Eagles went up 24-22 on a CSU attack error, but the Bucs rallied back as Parrott and Kaderli combined for a block and Parrott put in the kill to even the frame at 24-24. The Eagles took the final two points to close out the match and end play.
