CLEMSON, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell in their season opener to Appalachian State at the Big Orange Bash, dropping the match in three sets to the Mountaineers, 25-11, 25-17, 25-16.
Siraya Windsor led the way for the Buccaneers in their season opener with a team-high eight kills. She added a team-high 11 digs to the match as CSU rallied in each set against Appalachian State before falling short.
Katrina Houston added seven kills from the floor for CSU as the Bucs hit .103 as a team in the match. Cassidy Greer led the Bucs with a team-high 12 assists, while Brooke Green added eight assists. Defensively, Ashley Higginbothem tied with Windsor with 11 digs, while Kylie Klein had a match-high five blocks at the net.
Jess Keller led the Mountaineers with a match-high 16 kills, while Ashton Gregory added 10 as Appalachian State hit .330 from the floor as a team. Paige Brown set up the offense with 31 assists, while Meghan Mahoney had a match-high 16 digs in the win.
Charleston Southern continues the Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson at Jervey Gymnasium tomorrow afternoon as the Bucs take on tournament host Clemson at 1:30 p.m. and UNC Wilmington at 4:30 p.m.
Appalachian State jumped ahead early in the first set in taking the 25-11 win. In the second set, the Buccaneers kept the match close through the first 17 points, leading 9-8 on a kill from Connor Malone. The Mountaineers took the next three points and went on a 16-8 run to head into the break with the 2-0 lead.
Appalachian State came out of the break in the third set on an 11-2 run before the Buccaneers mounted a comeback in the frame. CSU rallied and went on a 5-0 run on Green's serve with Klein and Windsor both placing in kills before a Green ace pulled the Bucs back within 11-7. The five point deficit was the closest CSU was able to come though as the Mountaineers rallied to close out the match with the 25-16 set win.
