Volleyball Preview: Bucs host High Point and Campbell in final home stand this weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern returns home for their final home stand of the 2014 season as the Buccaneers host High Point and Campbell inside the Buc Dome.

The Buccaneers will recognize 2014 senior Kirsten Struksnes prior to Friday night's match against High Point as CSU celebrates volleyball Senior Night inside the Buc Dome. First serve between CSU and the Panthers is set for 7 p.m.

Saturday features Family Day for the Bucs volleyball program as CSU hosts Campbell inside the Buc Dome. First serve is set for 2 p.m. between the Bucs and the Camels.

Bucs against High Point...
Charleston Southern is 0-5 in their last five matches against High Point, previously falling to the Panthers on October 4, 3-0. The Bucs last win at home against High Point came on October 5, 2012, when CSU topped the Panthers 3-2 in a five-set thriller inside the Buc Dome.

High Point 3, Charleston Southern 0 (14-25, 13-25, 23-25)

Charleston Southern fell in three sets to host High Point on Saturday afternoon inside the Millis Center, dropping the Big South Conference match 25-14, 25-13, 25-23.

Meredith Parrott had seven kills to pace the Bucs offense in the match, while Connor Malone had five kills and three blocks as CSU fell to 7-13, 0-4 in Big South Conference play with the loss. High Point improves to 7-9, 1-2 in conference action with the victory. 

Bucs against Campbell...
Charleston Southern is 2-3 in their last five matches against Campbell, falling to the Camels earlier this season on October 3 in Gore Arena in five sets. The Bucs last win at home against the Camels came on November 10, 2012, when CSU swept Campbell in straight sets, 3-0.

Campbell 3, CSU 2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 14-16)

Charleston Southern fell in a five-set thriller to Campbell on Friday night inside Gore Arena despite double-doubles by Cassidy Greer and Siraya Windsor, as well as a 19 kill performance by Meredith Parrott, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 16-14.

With CSU holding the 13-8 lead in the fifth set following a 4-0 run sparked by a pair of Parrott kills, the Camels rallied back to tie the match up at 14-14 backed by four straight kills by Jessica Groen. The Camels continued their rally, finishing the match with an 8-1 run capped by a Groen service ace as CSU falls to 0-3 in Big South play in the 2014 season. 

Scouting High Point...
High Point comes into the match having won three of their past four games as the Panthers topped UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb and Liberty, while falling in five sets to Radford.

On the season, High Point has been led by Kristin Heldt's 3.34 kills per set, while Camryn Freiberg has a .331 hitting percentage. Gabi Mirand sets up the HPU attack with 10.3 assists per set. Mirand also leads the Panthers with 0.24 service aces per set. Defensively, Wavie Chin leads High Point with 4.91 digs per set. At the net, Freiberg is the team leader with 0.95 blocks per set.

Scouting Campbell...
Campbell enters the match having snapped a three match skid this past Saturday with a 3-1 win over Big South leader Liberty. Prior to the victory, the Camels had fallen to Gardner-Webb, UNC Asheville and Radford. 

Alexis Hein leads the Camels offense with 2.38 kills per set, while Jenny Tait is the team hitting leader at .260. Summer Schuitema sets up the Camel offense with 7.33 assists per set, while Mary Crema is the team leader at the service line with 0.34 aces per set. Defensively, Mary Crema leads the backline with 5.12 digs per set, while Lorin Thomas is the team leader at the net with 0.74 blocks per set.

Player Watch...
Meredith Parrott, CSU, Jr., Middle Blocker
Parrrott continues to sit among both the CSU and Big South leaders on the season in multiple categories, as the junior middle blocker sits 5th overall in kills, 4th overall in points and 5th in hitting percentage on the season in the conference rankings. For the year, Parrott is averaging 3.40 kills per set while hitting .297 from the floor. 

Siraya Windsor, CSU, Jr., Outside Hitter
Windsor sits among the CSU and Big South leaders on the season in multiple categories, as the junior outside hitter sits 8th in the Big South in kills, 10th in service aces and 9th in points. For the year, Windsor is averaging 3.20 kills per set and 0.24 service aces. 

1,000 Dig Club...
Ashley Higginbothem became the eighth player in CSU history to join the 1,000 dig club on Wednesday, passing Kathy Dantzler to move into seventh all-time with 1,007 career digs. Higginbothem, who started the season with 850 digs, is averaging 2.75 digs per set on the season.

20 years in the making...
Charleston Southern ended one of the longest streaks in Big South history on October 24th against UNC Asheville when the Bucs topped the Bulldogs, 3-1, inside the Justice Center. The win, CSU's first at Asheville in over 20 years, was paced by Meredith Parrott's 20 kills and a .607 hitting percentage, while Siraya Windsor and Katrina Houston both had double-doubles to lead CSU against UNC Asheville. 

Non-Conference, No Worries...
Charleston Southern wrapped up their 2014 non-conference slate on October 28th against Columbia (S.C.), sweeping the Fighting Koalas 3-0 inside the Buc Dome. The win put CSU above .500 on the season against non-conference opponents as the Bucs topped Norfolk State, N.C. A&T, The Citadel, South Carolina State (twice), N.C. Central (twice), Savannah State (twice) and Columbia (S.C.) on the season. Overall, CSU is 10-9 overall on the season against non-conference opponents.

Homegrown...
The Bucs have three players from the state of South Carolina on the 2014 roster with Siraya Windsor (Lexington), Liza Walker (Fort Mill) and Taylor Allman (Little River), all representing the Palmetto State.

Northern Border...
Charleston Southern senior setter Kirsten Struksnes is the lone international player on the CSU roster in the 2014 season, coming to the Bucs from Calgary, Alberta. During her time with the Bucs, Struksnes is sitting seventh all-time among the career leaders with 1,374 career set assists. Highlights from her playing career include four 50-plus set assist matches, including two back-to-back on Oct. 9, 2012 at The Citadel (55 assists) and Oct. 12 vs. Liberty (56 assists).

Record Setting Performance...
Allman broke a CSU record for digs in a single match as the sophomore libero recorded 36 digs over the four sets to break the previous record held by Jennifer Monson set on November 3, 2000 against UNC Asheville with 32 digs. Allman recorded 11 in the first set, six in the second, eight in the third and 11 in the fourth to pace CSU in the game and record the highest dig effort in the Big South in a single match to date in the 2014 season. Allman is currently fourth in the Big South in averaging 4.58 digs and continues to provide steady leadership for the Bucs with 16 matches where she has reached double-digits. 

Setting up the Buccaneers...
Cassidy Greer marked another career high this past weekend as the Mobile, Ala. setter led the Bucs to a 3-1 win over UNC Asheville at the Justice Center with a match-high 55 assists from the floor. Greer had 13 assists in the first set, 12 in the second set, 14 in the third set and 16 in the final set to pace CSU to their first Big South win of the season. Greer's previous high had been 49 assists on October 3, 2014 at Campbell. 

Double-Double Machine...
Siraya Windsor has led the Bucs on the season with 14 double-doubles on the year, and the junior outside hitter recently saw her six-match streak end this past weekend. Windsor recorded six straight matches with double-doubles dating back to a 12-kill, 16-dig match on October 15 at N.C. Central. She added five double-doubles in Big South play on the season, including 17 kills-18 digs against Campbell, 12 kills-18 digs against Liberty, 17 kills-16 digs against Radford, 15 kills-11 digs against UNC Asheville and 14 kills-13 digs against Gardner-Webb. Windsor, entered the season posting only six career double-doubles on the year, and leads the Bucs and is close to the Big South leaders in the category on the season.

Big South Connection...
Connor Malone continues to impress in Big South Conference play as the redshirt-sophomore middle blocker is currently fourth overall in the conference with a .317 hitting percentage on the year. Malone, who enters the match hitting .281 overall and averaging 1.11 kills per set, has upped her game in conference action with 1.47 kills per set and the team-leading .317 hitting percentage. Her highs on the season in conference play have been nine kills apiece against both Presbyterian and Campbell.

Coastal Carolina 3, Charleston Southern 0 (9-25, 19-25, 15-25)

Charleston Southern struggled on the road on Friday night at The HTC Center as the Buccaneers fell in straight sets to host Coastal Carolina, 3-0.

Meredith Parrott led the Bucs with five kills, while Taylor Allman had 19 digs to pace CSU's defensive efforts as the Bucs fell for the second time in the 2014 season to the Chanticleers.
