Volleyball Preview: Bucs travel to Presbyterian and Winthrop in Big South action

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern takes to the road this weekend, traveling to Presbyterian and Winthrop in Big South Conference play to wrap up October and begin November.

The Bucs will take on Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C., on Friday night inside the Templeton Center with first serve between CSU and the Blue Hose scheduled for 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live on the Big South Network, with Live Stats posted on GoBlueHose.com.

CSU will finish up the weekend on the road in Rock Hill, S.C., taking on Winthrop inside the Winthrop Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. First serve between the Bucs and the Eagles is set for 4 p.m. The match will also be streamed live on the Big South Network, with Live Stats posted on WinthropEagles.com.

Last Five against Presbyterian...
Charleston Southern has fallen in their past five matches against the Blue Hose. In their past five road matches, the Bucs have gone 1-4 inside the Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C. against Presbyterian, with their last win coming on October 15, 2010.

Presbyterian 3, CSU 1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-17)
Charleston Southern fell in a four-set thriller despite a record-setting performance by CSU libero Taylor Allman on Friday evening inside the Buc Dome, dropping to visiting Presbyterian in the Big South opener, 25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-17.

Allman broke a CSU record for digs in a single match as the sophomore libero recorded 36 digs over the four sets to break the previous record held by Jennifer Monson set on November 3, 2000 against UNC Asheville with 32 digs. Allman recorded 11 in the first set, six in the second, eight in the third and 11 in the fourth to pace CSU in the game and record the highest dig effort in the Big South in a single match to date in the 2014 season. 

Scouting Presbyterian...
Rachel Hall leads the Blue Hose on the season with 3.49 kills per set, while Rachel Elshoff (2.18) and Kelly Berryman (2.07) are both averaged multiple kills per set on the season. Hall also leads the Blue Hose on the year with a .209 hitting percentage. Ashtin Frank sets up the PC offense wtih 9.41 assists per set, while Elshoff is the team leader in averaging 0.33 service aces per set. 

Defensively, Mary Trimpe is the team leader on the backline with 4.90 digs per set. Elshoff (2.65), Frank (2.45) and Aubrey Dooley (2.04) are also averaging multiple digs per set on the season. At the net, Berryman is the PC leader with 1.02 blocks per set.

PC has lost their last three matches on the road, but has posted a 3-3 overall record at home this season with wins over USC upstate, Campbell and High Point.

Last Five against Winthrop...
Charleston Southern has gone 1-4 overall in their past five matches against the Eagles with their last win coming on September 22, 2012, in a five-set thriller inside the Buc Dome. The Bucs have gone 0-5 in their past five road matches to the Winthrop Coliseum, and have not won on the road against the Eagles since the 2000 season

Winthrop 3, CSU 1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-15)
Charleston Southern dropped their second match of the weekend inside the Buc Dome, falling to visiting Winthrop on Saturday afternoon in four sets, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-15.

Meredith Parrott led the Bucs with a match-high 17 kills on the day as the junior outside hitter hit .282 from the floor in the match. Siraya Windsor added nine kills and six digs, while Katrina Houston had eight kills and three blocks in the loss for the Bucs. 

Scouting Winthrop...
Alina Sopizhuk leads the Eagles on the season with 3.12 kills per set, while Emma Weakland (2.74), Rachel Lenz (2.36), Nikki Drost (2.23) and Kirsten Kuhl (2.00) are also averaging multiple kills per set. Lenz is the team leader with a .293 hitting percentage. Jessie Vicic leads Winthrop with 7.99 assists per set, while Kelly Scott is averaging 5.54 assists.

Defensively, Maria Volstad had 4.21 digs per set, while Sopizhuk (2.42), Raveen Golston (2.22) and Vicic (2.03) are also averaging multiple digs. Lenz leads the Eagles at the net with 1.39 blocks per set.

Winthrop has lost back-to-back matches and lines up against Coastal Carolina on Friday night before taking on the Bucs on Saturday. The Eagles are 6-4 at home this season with wins over Furman, Davidson, USC Upstate, UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb and Campbell. 

Player Watch...
Meredith Parrott, CSU, Jr., Middle Blocker
Parrrott continues to sit among both the CSU and Big South leaders on the season in multiple categories, as the junior middle blocker sits 3rd overall in kills, 4th overall in points and 4th in hitting percentage on the season in the conference rankings. For the year, Parrott is averaging 3.53 kills per set while hitting .312 from the floor.

Siraya Windsor, CSU, Jr., Outside Hitter
Windsor sits among the CSU and Big South leaders on the season in multiple categories, as the junior outside hitter sits 6th in the Big South in kills, 6th in service aces and 6th in points. For the year, Windsor is averaging 3.39 kills per set and 0.26 service aces. 

1,000 Dig Club...
Ashley Higginbothem became the eighth player in CSU history to join the 1,000 dig club on Wednesday, passing Kathy Dantzler to move into seventh all-time with 1,007 career digs. Higginbothem, who started the season with 850 digs, is averaging 2.75 digs per set on the season.

Siraya Windsor capped off the night with her 10th kill to mark her sixth consecutive double-double as Charleston Southern topped visiting Columbia (S.C.) on Tuesday night inside the Buc Dome in straight sets, 25-12, 25-18, 25-15.

Windsor, whose double-double streak now dates back to October 15th against N.C. Central, led the Bucs with 10 kills and added 10 digs as CSU hit .318 as a team from the floor in the match. Kylie Klein added nine kills, while Meredith Parrott had eight kills and three service aces top pace CSU to their seventh sweep of the season.

Northern Border...
Charleston Southern senior setter Kirsten Struksnes is the lone international player on the CSU roster in the 2014 season, coming to the Bucs from Calgary, Alberta. During her time with the Bucs, Struksnes is sitting seventh all-time among the career leaders with 1,374 career set assists. Highlights from her playing career include four 50-plus set assist matches, including two back-to-back on Oct. 9, 2012 at The Citadel (55 assists) and Oct. 12 vs. Liberty (56 assists). 

Record Setting Performance...

Setting up the Buccaneers...
Cassidy Greer marked another career high this past weekend as the Mobile, Ala. setter led the Bucs to a 3-1 win over UNC Asheville at the Justice Center with a match-high 55 assists from the floor. Greer had 13 assists in the first set, 12 in the second set, 14 in the third set and 16 in the final set to pace CSU to their first Big South win of the season. Greer's previous high had been 49 assists on October 3, 2014 at Campbell. 

Double-Double Machine...
Siraya Windsor has led the Bucs on the season with 14 double-doubles on the year, and the junior outside hitter is on a six-match streak dating back to a 12-kill, 16-dig match on October 15 at N.C. Central. Windsor has added five double-doubles in Big South play on the season, including 17 kills-18 digs against Campbell, 12 kills-18 digs against Liberty, 17 kills-16 digs against Radford, 15 kills-11 digs against UNC Asheville and 14 kills-13 digs against Gardner-Webb. Windsor, who entered the season with six career double-doubles, is averaging 3.39 kills and 3.09 digs per set.

Homegrown...
The Bucs have three players from the state of South Carolina on the 2014 roster with Siraya Windsor (Lexington), Liza Walker (Fort Mill) and Taylor Allman (Little River), all representing the Palmetto State.
