Volleyball Preview: Bucs finish up road trip at S.C. State on Tuesday night

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern travels to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on South Carolina State for the second time this season as the Bucs take on S.C. State on Tuesday night inside the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. First serve between the Bucs and the Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m.

Bucs against S.C. State...
Charleston Southern is 14-0 overall going back to the 2000 season against S.C. State. The Bucs defeated the Bulldogs earlier this season at the Wingate Invitational at CSU on September 12, winning 3-0.

Last Time The Bucs Met the Bulldogs...
Siraya Windsor led all players with 12 kills in the match as the Buccaneers rebounded to hit .216 in the afternoon match in defeating S.C. State in straight sets to close out the first day of the Wingate Invitational. 

Meredith Parrott added eight kills, while Kylie Klein had six kills and three blocks to guide the Bucs past the Bullogs. Cassidy Greer (17 assists) and Brooke Green (10 assists) set up the CSU offense, while Taylor Allman had a match-high 17 digs in the victory.

Scouting the Bulldogs..
S.C. State comes into the match with a 1-16 overall record on the season, posting their first win of the 2014 campaign this past Friday night in a 3-1 win on the road to Savannah State. The Bulldogs will also play Big South opponent UNC Asheville next Saturday. 

On the year, Marissa Lawrence is the team leader with 2.82 kills per set, while Kirby Anderson is averaging 2.25 kills per set on the season. Anderson is also the team hitting leader, connecting at a .185 hitting percentage, while Melanie Williams is the team leader with 5.04 assists per set.

Defensively, Tyler Ockleberry is the backline leader with 3.60 digs per set. At the net, Anderson is the team leader with 0.96 blocks per set.

Buccaneers Last Match...
Meredith Parrott had seven kills to pace the Bucs offense in the match, while Connor Malone had five kills and three blocks as CSU fell to 7-13, 0-4 in Big South Conference play with the loss. High Point improves to 7-9, 1-2 in conference action with the victory. 

Cassidy Greer set up the CSU attack with 15 assists, while Taylor Allman (14) and Ashley Higginbothem (10) both were in double-digits in digs. Kylie Klein equaled Malone with three blocks on the afternoon.

Player Watch...
Meredith Parrott, CSU, Jr., Outside Hitter
Parrrott continues to sit among both the CSU and Big South leaders on the season in multiple categories, as the junior outside hitter sits 3rd overall in kills, 3rd overall in points and 6th in hitting percentage on the season in the conference rankings. For the year, Parrott is averaging 3.51 kills per set while hitting .286 from the floor. She is averaging 3.96 points per game overall and is coming off of a strong weekend performance that saw her connect on 19 kills against Campbell. 

Taylor Allman, CSU, So., Libero
Allman leads the Bucs on the season from the backline as the sophomore libero enters the weekend fourth in the Big South in averaging 4.58 digs per set. Allman is coming off of a weekend that saw her set a CSU record with 36 digs in the loss to Presbyterian, while averaging 5.91 digs per set on the week. The sophomore libero's 36 digs currently is the most in a match in the Big South this season. Other highlights from this season include 22 digs against USC Upstate, 20 against N.C. Central and 19 against Cincinnati.

Welcome to the Coaching Staff...
CSU welcomed new assistant coach Lauren Comfort to the CSU staff this past January, coming to the Bucs by way of Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville, Tenn. During her time with the Trojans', she assisted in all areas of the program. Her playing days saw Comfort standout at Olivet Nazarene Unversity where she led the team to a 124-49 overall record and 41-2 in conference play, where she finished with 1,516 career digs and 169 aces.

Homegrown...
The Bucs have three players from the state of South Carolina on the 2014 roster with Siraya Windsor (Lexington), Liza Walker (Fort Mill) and Taylor Allman (Little River), all representing the Palmetto State.

Northern Border...
Charleston Southern senior setter Kirsten Struksnes is the lone international player on the CSU roster in the 2014 season, coming to the Bucs from Calgary, Alberta. During her time with the Bucs, Struksnes is sitting seventh all-time among the career leaders with 1,374 career set assists. Highlights from her playing career include four 50-plus set assist matches, including two back-to-back on Oct. 9, 2012 at The Citadel (55 assists) and Oct. 12 vs. Liberty (56 assists). 

Record Setting Performance...
Allman broke a CSU record for digs in a single match as the sophomore libero recorded 36 digs over the four sets to break the previous record held by Jennifer Monson set on November 3, 2000 against UNC Asheville with 32 digs. Allman recorded 11 in the first set, six in the second, eight in the third and 11 in the fourth to pace CSU in the game and record the highest dig effort in the Big South in a single match to date in the 2014 season. Allman is currently fourth in the Big South in averaging 4.58 digs and continues to provide steady leadership for the Bucs with 16 matches where she has reached double-digits.
