Volleyball Preview: CSU hosts Presbyterian and Winthrop to open up Big South play this weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern takes on Presbyterian and Winthrop this weekend inside the Buc Dome on Friday and Saturday as CSU opens up Big South Conference play. The Bucs host the Blue Hose on Friday night at 7 p.m., while CSU takes on Winthrop on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. 

Friday's match against Presbyterian will be streamed live via the Big South Network, while Live Stats and updates provided on Twitter @CSUsports will be available all weekend at CSUsports.com.

Charleston Southern Match Notes

Bucs against Presbyterian and Winthrop...
Charleston Southern is 4-11 overall going back to the 2000 season against Presbyterian. The Bucs last win over the Blue Hose came back in 2010 on the road in Clinton, S.C.

CSU is 2-29 overall against Winthrop dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs last win over the Eagles came inside the Buc Dome on September 22, 2012 in a five-set thriller.

Scouting the Blue Hose/Eagles...
Presbyterian enters the weekend with a 5-7 record overall on the season with victories over N.C. Central, Wofford, Davidson, Hampton and USC Upstate. PC was selected ninth in the Big South preseason poll.

The Blue Hose have been led on the season by Rachel Hall's 3.47 kills and 0.242 hitting percentage. Ashtin Frank sets up the PC offense with 9.49 assists per set and is the team leader with 0.35 aces per set. Defensively, Mary Trimpe is the team leader on the backline with 4.67 digs per set, while Kelly Berryman is the leader at the net with 1.07 blocks per set.

Winthrop enters the weekend with a 9-6 overall record with wins over Rutgers, Charlotte, Furman, South Florida, Troy, Davidson, Wake Forest, Elon and Western Carolina. The Eagles were selected fifth in the Big South preseason poll.

Alina Sopizhuk leads the Eagles on the season with 3.17 kills per set, while Rachel Lenz is the team leader with a .321 hitting percentage. Jessie Vicic sets up the Eagles offense with 8.78 assists per set, while Emily Teelon averages 0.29 aces per set. Defensively, Maria Volstad is the team leader with 3.76 digs per set. Rachel Lenz is the leader at the net with 1.31 blocks per set. 

Player Watch...
Siraya Windsor, CSU, Jr., Outside Hitter
Windsor continues to impress in the 2014 season as the junior outside hitter is second in the Big South Conference on the season in averaging 3.85 kills per set and is third with 4.18 points per set. The Lexington, S.C. native has posted seven double-doubles on the season including 18 kills and 14 digs in CSU's loss to Cincinnati. For the season, Windsor is hitting .169 on the season and averaging 2.71 digs per set for the Bucs. Among her season highlights includes a season-high 22 kills on Sept. 6 against The Citadel and 17 digs on Sept. 13 against USC Upstate. 

Rachel Hall, PC, Sr., Middle Blocker
Hall is the Presbyterian hitting leader on the season, averaging 3.47 kills per set, while hitting .242 from the floor. The senior middle blocker is second on the team in averaging 0.72 blocks per set and has nine matches with double-digit kills on the season. Season-highs for Hall include 20 kills in PC's win over Davidson, as well as eight blocks against Wake Forest and seven blocks against Georgetown. 

Alina Sopizhuk, WU, Sr., Outside Hitter
Sopizhuk leads the Eagles offense on the season with 3.17 kills per set. She has two double-doubles on the season with both coming in Winthrop wins over Charlotte and Furman. For the season, the Donetsk, Ukraine native is hitting .186 from the floor and 1.92 digs per set. She is also averaging 0.30 blocks per set. Among her season highlights includes a season-high 18 kills in WU's 5-set win over Winthrop, as well as 14 digs against SIU-Evansville and Furman.

Homegrown...
The Bucs have three players from the state of South Carolina on the 2014 roster with Siraya Windsor (Lexington), Liza Walker (Fort Mill) and Taylor Allman (Little River), all representing the Palmetto State.

Last Time Out…
Meredith Parrott had 10 kills and Siraya Windsor narrowly missed out on a double-double as Charleston Southern swept visiting Savannah State on Tuesday night inside the Buc Dome, 25-10, 25-22, 25-17.

Parrott hit .409 in the match to pace the Buccaneers' offense in the match, while Windsor added nine kills and a pair of service aces as CSU trailed only once in the evening in snapping a four-match losing streak.

Cassidy Greer set up the Bucs attack with 20 assists, while Brooke Green had eight assists in the third set to lead CSU to the win. Taylor Allman led the backline with 14 digs, while Windsor added 12 in narrowly missing out on her eighth double-double of the season. Kylie Klein added two blocks to lead the Bucs at the net.
