Scouting the Tournament Field...
Tournament host The Citadel has seen the most action of the field against Charleston Southern in recent years as the two local rivals have met 17 times over the past 14 seasons, with the Bucs posting a 12-5 record against the Bulldogs. The Citadel was selected ninth overall in the SoCon preseason poll, but the Bulldogs feature one of their deeper teams in recent history with four players ranking among the top 15 players in multiple categories in The Citadel's record books. The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 1-2 overall record on the season with a win over Providence at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational and have been led on the year by Moriah Smith's 2.63 kills per set, while Rachel Keefer is averaging 7.6 assists per set in leading the offense.
Stetson, the Buccaneers opponent in Friday's opener at The Citadel Invitational, was picked to finish sixth overall in the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Sophomore outside hitter Tiffany Creamer was voted to the preseason All-Conference team after a season in averaging 2.89 kills and 1.31 digs per game, setting a Stetson school record with 358 kills as a freshman. Another standout freshman lurks for the Hatters this season as outside hitter McKenna Foster was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Week after leading Stetson to a 2-1 mark at the FAU Invitational with wins over McNeese State and Bethune-Cookman. The Ocala, Fla., native averaged 2.92 kills per set and added 22 digs, seven blocks and three aces and will look to improve her marks heading into this week's tournament.
Head Coach Hal Clifton has North Carolina A&T moving toward new heights this season after getting picked second in the MEAC Southern Division in the annual preseason poll. The Aggies return six juniors who have seen extensive playing time since they walked onto campus as true freshmen, and look to continue to build on a strong campaign last season. So far this year, N.C. A&T has posted an 0-4 record after falling in all four matches at the Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Indiana State. The Aggies are led on the season by Aleena McDaniel's 2.27 kills per set, while Liz Martino is averaging 6.67 assists per frame.
