CHARLESTON, S.C. - The return of the Charleston Southern Invitational highlights 14 home matches the Buccaneers will host inside the Buc Dome in the 2014 season as Head Coach Christy Mooberry announced the release of the 2014 volleyball schedule on Tuesday afternoon.
Highlighting the schedule is the Charleston Southern Invitational as the Buccaneers will host Jacksonville, South Carolina State, North Carolina Central and USC Upstate over the two day weekend. Also visiting the Buc Dome in the 2014 season includes home matches against local rival College of Charleston and Big South showdowns against Presbyterian, Winthrop, Coastal Carolina, Liberty, Radford, High Point and Campbell.
"We are excited to get to host a home tournament this year, allowing for families and fans to join us in the excitement," Mooberry said. "Our preseason tournaments allow for some solid competition from the start and the James Madison and Cincinnati road trips will also be great for team bonding early in the season before we head into the Big South season."
CSU returns seven players from the 2014 squad, including 2013 Big South All-Academic selection Meredith Parrott, as well as standout libero Ashley Higginbothem to the roster, while six incoming freshmen will battle for playing time on the court with the Bucs.
"We have some solid leaders returning who set the pace, understanding the fleshing out of loving each other as well as holding each other to the expectation of nothing less than their best," Mooberry commented. "The incoming freshmen will give us more depth in every position and will elevate the competition level in the gym. Having Ashley (Higginbothem) and her strong work ethic back on the court, as well as the two Taylor's, will make it fun to watch our defense progress this season. Spring transfer Connor Malone will also help us up front after a solid job in the spring season, and I'm excited to see her and the team bring that energy to the court this fall."
The Bucs open the season on the road over the first two weekends, playing in the James Madison Classic (Aug. 29-30) in Harrisonburg, Va., and The Citadel Invitational (Sept. 5-6). CSU will take on Villanova, James Madison and Norfolk State at the JMU Classic, while playing Stetson, N.C. A&T and The Citadel at The Citadel Invite.
The first home match of the season for the Bucs brings local rival CofC to the Buc Dome on September 9th for a 7 p.m. first serve. The home stand continues over the weekend at the CSU Invitational with eight matches being played among the five teams in the field from September 12-13.
The final tournament of the year sends the Bucs to Cincinnati, Ohio, and the Cincinnati Invitational on September 19-20. CSU will take on Central Michigan, host Cincinnati and Tennessee State over the two day event.
The Bucs return home for a three-match home stand beginning on September 23rd against Savannah State. Big South Conference play begins during the stretch with the Bucs hosting Presbyterian (Sept. 26) and Winthrop (Sept. 27).
A four-match road trip ends September and opens up October for the Bucs as CSU makes the trip to Savannah State on September 30th, before traveling to Campbell (Oct. 3), High Point (Oct. 4) and S.C. State (Oct. 7).
The Bucs return home on October 10th to take on Coastal Carolina, sandwiching a road game at N.C. Central (Oct. 15), with two home conference matches on October 17 and 18 against Liberty and Radford.
A home match on October 28th against Columbia (S.C.) is in the middle of their final road trip of the season as the Bucs take on UNC Asheville (Oct. 24), Gardner-Webb (Oct. 25), Presbyterian (Oct. 31), Winthrop (Nov. 1) and Coastal Carolina (Nov. 7) away from home.
CSU closes out the 2014 regular season at home as the Bucs host High Point (Nov. 14) and Campbell (Nov. 15) on Senior Weekend.
