CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charleston Southern senior middle blocker Erin LaVenice was selected to the Big South All-Conference Honorable Mention team, while sophomore middle blocker Meredith Parrott was named to the Big South All-Academic Team as the Buccaneers were honored by the Big South Conference on Tuesday afternoon.
LaVenice wrapped up a storied career for the Buccaneers in leading both Charleston Southern and the Big South in hitting percentage on the season at .333, while finishing third in the conference in blocks with 1.06 per set. The Lancaster, Pa., native was even better in conference play, leading the Big South by a wide margin in hitting .376 on the year, including a sparkling .688 in her season finale against Campbell. LaVenice finished up her career with 295 career blocks, finishing 10th all-time in the CSU record books in the category. She also finished with 251 career block assists, fifth in the category in the Bucs record books.
Parrott, a sophomore Religion and Sociology major, is a two-time Dean's List honoree and CSU Scholar Athlete. She was also recognized on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll in 2012-13. Parrott, a 2012 Big South All-Freshman selection, followed up her first campaign in averaging 1.99 kills per set, hitting .231 from the floor on the year. She also finished second on the team with 0.72 blocks per set, as well as finishing fourth on the team with 17 service aces.
Radford outside hitter Rachel Wiechecki has been voted the 2013 Big South Conference Volleyball Player of the Year, while Highlanders' head coach Marci Jenkins was selected Coach of the Year, it was announced today. In addition, High Point middle blocker Savannah Angel was voted as the Freshman of the Year by the League's head coaches and Radord's Emma Deininger was selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the League's sports information directors.
