RADFORD, Va. - Charleston Southern closed out their three match road trip on Saturday afternoon, falling in straight sets to Big South opponent Radford inside the Dedmon Center Arena, 25-14, 25-16, 25-16.
Siraya Windsor had nine kills for the Buccaneers on the match as CSU could not keep pace with the high-powered Radford attack as the Highlanders hit .458 from the floor in the match in recording the important conference win.
Charleston Southern falls to 5-17, 0-7 in Big South play on the season, while Radford improves to 16-8 overall, 5-2 in conference action with the win.
Windsor led the Buccaneers with nine kills on the match and added five digs overall to lead the CSU offense in hitting .146 as a team from the floor. Kayla Klinger added six kills and a team-high nine digs in the match, while Kirsten Struksnes set up the CSU attack with 13 set assists. Klinger and Maggie Murphy both had two service aces apiece in the loss.
Rachel Wiechecki led all players with 15 kills in the match, while Emma Deininger added 13 of her own to pace the Highlanders attack on the afternoon. Jena Braden and Rachel Flores combined for 40 set assists in the match, while Cheyanne James had a team-high 12 digs in the match. Wiechecki was also in double-digits in digs to complete the double-double with 11 digs on the floor.
With the score 5-4 in favor of Radford in the first set, the host Highlanders went on a 9-2 run in taking a commanding 14-6 lead following a pair of blocks by Savannah Cantrell and James. The Buccaneers attempted to rally back behind four first set kills by Windsor, but the Highlanders lead reached double-digits at 22-12 on a block by Wiechecki and Deininger as Radford closed out the opening 25-14 set win.
The second set saw the Bucs go on a 4-0 run early on Murphy's serve to take the 7-6 lead as Parrott provided a kill along the way to push CSU ahead. The Bucs clung to the one-point advantage through 11-10 following a Radford service error, but the Highlanders followed with back-to-back Deininger kills in going up 13-11 in the set. Charleston Southern kept the frame close as Murphy followed a Windsor kill with a service ace to bring the Bucs back to within one at 16-15, but Radford followed with a 9-1 run to close out the set with Savanna Burton putting in the final point of the Highlanders 25-16 set win.
Charleston Southern again built a 7-6 lead in the third set as Klinger and Murphy provided early aces in the frame to put the Bucs ahead of the Highlanders. However, Radford rallied with a 12-5 run in building an 18-12 lead following a trio of Wiechecki kills. CSU continued to battle back as Windsor provided two late kills and LaVenice connected on a kill of her own, but the Highlanders closed out the final 25-16 set win with a 7-1 run to end the afternoon.
CSU returns home to the Buc Dome on Thursday evening as Charleston Southern takes on Gardner-Webb. First serve in the Big South match between the Bucs and the Runnin' Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.
