Buccaneers selected ninth in Big South preseason volleyball poll

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) – The Charleston Southern University volleyball team was selected ninth overall in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll, as voted on by the League's head volleyball coaches and announced this afternoon by the Big South office.

The Liberty University volleyball team has been chosen first in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll and Lady Flames' middle blocker Caroline Douglas was voted the Conference's Preseason Player of the Year.

Under first year head coach Christine Mooberry, Charleston Southern is led by returning seniors Kayla KlingerErin LaVeniceLaura Grace Swindler and Maggie Murphy, as well as 2012 All-Conference Freshman team selection Meredith Parrott as the Buccaneers look to build off of a 13-21 season last year as CSU advanced to the Big South Quarterfinals.

"Preseason polls certainly don't define or guarantee an outcome," commented Mooberry on the poll results. "At any given time different factors can play into wins and losses. Our own personal expectations are obviously different than others in the conference and that is what I care most about; I want the team to expect a lot from themselves. Our goal is to bring our best every day and every match and we will see where that takes us."

Liberty, under the direction of 10th year head coach Shane Pinder, was selected to finish first for the third year in a row. The Lady Flames received eight first-place votes and 98 total points. Coastal Carolina, last year's tournament runner-up, picked up the two remaining first-place votes to finish second in the poll with 92 points. High Point earned 78 points from the coaches to claim the third spot, while UNC Asheville finished fourth with 56 points -- just two points ahead of fifth-place Presbyterian College (54). Radford garnered 52 points for sixth-place, ahead of Winthrop and Gardner-Webb, who were selected seventh and eighth with 47 and 32 points, respectively. Campbell and Charleston Southern round out the list tied for ninth-place with 20 points.

Douglas, a redshirt-sophomore middle blocker from Greenville, N.C., is the reigning Big South Player of the Year in addition to being named Big South Freshman of the Year, First-Team All-Conference and All-Tournament. Last season, as an outside hitter, she led the Big South with 454 kills and her league-high 3.69 kills per set ranked ninth nationally among all freshmen. Douglas posted 27 10-kill matches and two 20-kill efforts, including a career-best 26 kills at High Point. Her hitting percentage of .281 ranked seventh in the Conference and first among outside hitters. Douglas received eight first-place votes and 58 points to earn the top spot on the Preseason All-Conference Team.
