CHARLESTON, S.C. - Two home tournaments highlight the Charleston Southern volleyball team's 2012 schedule, which was announced Wednesday by head coach Danyel Bellush. A year after playing only eight of their matches at Buccaneer Fieldhouse, the Bucs will host 16 of their 31 contests this season.
Seven of those home bouts will be Big South Conference matchups, beginning with Presbyterian College on Friday, September 21, and ending with the senior day match versus Campbell on Saturday, November 10.
CSU will start off the home slate on Friday, August 31, when it meets Canisius as part of the first installment of the Charleston Southern Home Tournament. The Bucs will also take on USC Upstate that night, before opposing Mercer and Furman on day two of competition to open the month of September.
Prior to playing in front of its home fans for the first time of 2012, Bellush's squad will open the season against some stiff competition in the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic. First up is a match with Southern Methodist of Conference USA on Friday, August 24, followed by meetings with the host Yellow Jackets, as well as Cal State Fullerton, the following day.
"We once again have a challenging schedule that will test our team from the start," Bellush said of the 31-match slate. "We're especially excited about playing 16 home matches, and are looking forward to hosting two tournaments which should prepare us for the Big South season."
In addition to the Georgia Tech tourney and the two tournaments to be hosted at Buccaneer Fieldhouse, the Bucs will also travel north to Baltimore, Md. from September 7-8 to take part in the Loyola University (Md.) Tournament. While there, CSU will challenge the host Greyhounds, as well as Morgan State and Wright State.
In-state matches against USC Upstate, Furman, Wofford and intra-city rival The Citadel also headline CSU's out-of-conference docket. The Bucs will play a home-and-home with the Bulldogs, hosting on Saturday, September 15, before heading downtown to McAllister Fieldhouse on Tuesday, October 9.
The Big South is employing a 14-game regular season schedule for the second consecutive year, and CSU will play home-and-homes with Presbyterian, Winthrop, Campbell, High Point and Coastal Carolina. CSU will also entertain Liberty and Radford in its home gym, in addition to traveling to UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb.
Following the regular season, the top-eight teams in the league will travel to Paul Porter Arena on the campus of Gardner-Webb to compete in the Big South Conference Tournament from Thursday, November 15, through Sunday, November 18.
