CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The throwers and distance runners took center stage for Charleston Southern on the first day of the Charlotte Invitational as the Buccaneers recorded top-three finishes in the men's 1500m race and the men's hammer throw at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex at Transamerica Stadium.
Fearghal Curtin (1500m race) and JP Caglione (men's hammer throw) paced CSU's efforts on the first day of the event hosted by UNC Charlotte.
Milan Williams led three Bucs in the women's hammer throw event. The sophomore achieved 49.71m to place seventh overall in the field. Madison McCoy was 12th with a throw of 46.99m, while Alexus Foreman was 17th after reaching 38.14m.
JP Caglione impressed in his first event of the Charlotte Invitational as the sophomore thrower placed second overall in the men's hammer throw to lead four Bucs in the field. Caglione was one of two athletes to clear 50-meters on the day with his throw of 53.61m putting him behind only Gardner-Webb's Jordan Smith (54.82m). Caglione shattered his previous mark of 51.77m set at the Florida Relays and was the fifth-longest throw in CSU history.
Ryan Spiecha just missed out on a top-three performance with a throw of 47.80m to place fourth in the field. Seth Wolfe also in the top-five with a throw of 44.36m, while Clarence Moss was eighth with 43.11m.
Haley Newell took on the field for the Bucs in the women's javelin throw. The freshman reached 27.03m to place 11th overall.
Georgina Russell paced the Bucs in the women's 1500m race at the Charlotte Invitationals with the redshirt senior crossing the line 14th in the field. She finished in 4:37.54 leading the Bucs in the event. Her pace was four seconds off her previous mark at the Florida Relays.
Freshman Fearghal Curtin continues a strong spring campaign with a third-place finish in the men's 1500m race. Curtin crossed the line in 3:51.49 to lead four Bucs in the event. Jeryck Wilson was 13th in the field with a time of 3:53.98, while Andrew Akright was 16th in 3:54.39. Jaymee Domoney rounded out the group in 27th after crossing the line in 4:13.64.
Trevor Dominy and Hayden Alexander took on the field in the men's 3000m steeplechase. Dominy placed seventh overall in the field with a time of 9:34.12, while Alexander was 11th crossing in 9:47.79.
Charleston Southern closes out the second day of the Charlotte Invitational starting tomorrow morning. Events will run all day.
