Throwers pace Buccaneers on first day of the Weems Baskin Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Charleston Southern was paced by the throwers on the first day of the Weems Baskin Invitational on Friday at South Carolina's Sheila and Morris Cregger Track.

Megan Newton and Quinlan Hammond both paced the Bucs in the men's and women's javelin events on Friday, while senior Jacob Moore finished third in the men's hammer throw B on the first day of two in Columbia.

Newton finished second in the field of the women's javelin Throw B on Friday. The freshman finished with a best throw of 33.05m, finishing behind Appalachian State's Samantha Welborn (33.82m) in the field.

Hammond finished second in the men's javelin throw B. The sophomore thrower finished with a distance of 46.01m to finish behind USC's Markus Leemet in the event.

Moore paced the Bucs in the men's hammer throw B finishing third overall in the field. Moore's throw of 49.89m led all college athletes in the event.

Freshman Milan Williams was one of nine throwers to advance to Saturday's finals in the women's hammer throw. Williams' distance of 48.90m placed her eighth among the field on Friday.

Emma-Lisa Murphy paced the Bucs in the women's 5000m run on Friday night placing 12th overall in the field with a time of 20:38.41.

Shantel Ardley led the Bucs in the women's 100m dash B on Friday finishing seventh overall with a time of 12.34.

Alexis Adams finished 10th in the women's 400m dash B on Friday, crossing the line in 58.64. Ardley was 16th in the event with a time of 1:00.03.

Demisha Norman placed 21st overall in the women's long jump B with a distance of 5.14m. Victoria Gibson was 32nd in the same event with a distance of 4.96m.

The men's 4x800m relay team took on the field, finishing seventh overall in the event. The quartet of Keith Terry, Brandon Damon, Chris Fludd-Clark, and Josiah Scarlett finished with a time of 8:09.83.

Niegel Simmons narrowly missed out on advancing to the men's long jump final. The freshman jumper finished with a jump of 7.09m to finish 10th in the event.

Terry led the Bucs in the men's 400m dash with the sophomore finishing 19th overall in the field with a time of 51.24. Brandon Damon was 30th overall with a time of 52.21, while Justin Green crossed the line in 52.49 to place 35th in the event. Sheldon Townsend crossed the line in 53.37 in 41st place in the event.

Charleston Southern continues the competition tomorrow morning with the men's discus at 9 a.m. while the women's 1500m starts the track events on the final day.
