CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern opens its outdoor season this weekend at the Bagwell-Settle Track as CSU welcomes 20 teams to the CSU Spring Break Invitational on March 17-18.
The two-day event begins at 10 a.m. on March 17 with the Men's Hammer Throw event, while track events will start with the men's 110m hurdles at 11 a.m. Friday night will feature the distance carnival on the track with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase starting the night at 7 p.m.
Saturday will continue the competition with the men's discus starting off the day at 9 a.m. Track events begin with the men's 4x100 meter relay at noon. The final scheduled event of the meet is the women's 4x400 meter relay scheduled to start at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
The meet will be the first time teams will get the opportunity to compete at the facility that will host the 2017 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The three-day event is scheduled for May 10-12.
"It's important to have home meets at Charleston Southern for our teams and for the CSU community," Stintzi said on hosting the CSU Spring Break Invitational. "Charleston's climate is ideal for a spring invitational and we want to take advantage of being at home and racing in ideal conditions as often as possible."
The CSU Spring Break Invitational field will feature 20 teams coming to the CSU event in the first meet held on the CSU campus since the 2010 Big South Outdoor Championships.
"In a general sense, hosting this meet will give us some outdoor experience in a large meet format," Stintzi commented. "More importantly, this will give us a chance to compete at home prior to the Big South later this spring."
Charleston Southern finished fourth in both the men's and women's standings at the Indoor Big South Championships on February 25-26 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. Freshman long jumper Niegel Simmons' Big South individual title led 10 Bucs who recorded podium finishes at the meet.
"We need to continue what we began during the indoor season," Stintzi said on the changeover from indoor to outdoor. "We need to keep focusing on working hard, staying healthy, and keeping our eyes on the end of the season."
