CHARLESTON, S.C. - Four members of the Charleston Southern track and field teams will participate in this week's USA Track and Field 2009 National Championships, held in Eugene, Ore. Patria Norman, Gabrielle Houston and Anthony Ward, all of whom just completed their freshman seasons, will compete in the USA Junior National meet, while rising senior Levi Brooks will compete in the USATF Championships.
Brooks will be the first athlete to run, with the first round of the 400m dash competition going off at 9:20 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, June 25. The top finishers in the meet will have the chance to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Championships in Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany. It will be the first major international track and field event in the stadium since the 1936 Olympic Games, when Jesse Owens' won four gold medals.
Norman will see the most action, competing in the heptathlon, while Houston will take part in the 200m dash competition on the women's side. Both Lady Buccaneers will start Saturday, June 27 at 9 a.m. with the Norman facing the 100m hurdles, while Houston will start the first round at 2:20 p.m. (ET) Ward will represent the men's team at Junior Nationals, taking part in the 100m dash at 5:20 p.m. (ET) on Friday, June 26.
The top two finishers in each event will qualify for the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, held in Port of Spain, Trinidad on July 31 - August 2.
Both championships will be televised nightly on ESPN and NBC.
