CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern wraps up their three-game Big South homestand on Saturday afternoon against Gardner-Webb.
The Bucs (4-5, 2-1 Big South) have won four of their last five matches and two of three at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. Their only loss at home this season was to Campbell on Monday, but even that loss was 4-3 in a close match.
CSU's Michelle Schmitz earned weekly honors from the conference office in being named Big South Player of the Week..Schmitz led the Bucs to their first win in program history over Lowcountry rival College of Charleston. She took the deciding match on court no. 3 for the Buccaneers as the two teams went down to the final point. Schmitz's match went into the deciding third set as well. Schmitz took the opening frame over Lily LaBiche, 6-3, before dropping the second set, 4-6. In the deciding set, the CSU sophomore proved victorious with the 6-3 victory to clinch the win for CSU. She later picked up her second singles win of the week with a victory over Kiah Turner of Hampton on Saturday.
Filippa Ericson and Schmitz have won five singles matches so far this season and are tied for the team lead. Ericson now has back-to-back three set wins coming into Saturday's match. She also has a team leading six doubles wins when paired with Kimberley Koerner.
Adrienne Vesely has Gardner-Webb's most singles wins this season with her a 3-1 record. She's played all four of her matches at the five spot. The Runnin' Bulldogs' top three seeds (Miljana Ristic, Daniela Naupari, Valentine, Limauge) all have two singles wins on the season.
After Saturday's match, the Bucs hit the road for another Big South match at UNC Asheville (Mar. 13) before returning home for back-to-back home matches against Presbyterian (Mar. 19) and South Carolina State (Mar. 20).
