WTEN PREVIEW: Bucs host Hampton in Big South play

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern continues the 2019 season this weekend as the Buccaneers continue Big South women's tennis play on Saturday afternoon against Hampton.

It marks the first time the Buccaneers and Pirates have lined up against each other as Big South opponents. Hampton joined the conference as full members over the summer after leaving the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The Bucs (3-4, 1-0 Big South) boast a three-match winning streak heading into this weekend's contest. CSU is currently 1-0 at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex on the year after posting their first home win of the season this past Saturday against UNC Wilmington.

CSU's win over the Seahawks last Saturday drew recognition from the Big South as Madalina Man (Player) and Tiffany Pyritz (Freshman) earned weekly honors from the conference office. Man and Pyritz combined for the doubles point and then both won their singles matches in CSU's 5-2 win over UNCW.

The Bucs rode the momentum from their win over UNCW to capturing CSU's first win in program history over College of Charleston this past Monday. Michelle Schmitz captured the deciding match on singles court no. 3 with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Lily LaBiche to secure the 4-3 win over the Cougars.

After a difficult opening stretch, the Buccaneers have rounded into form with wins in their last three matches.

Kimberley Koerner and Michelle Schmitz are each on three-match winning streaks in singles play, while Filippa Ericson has posted a 3-4 overall record while lining up on courts 1 and 2.

The doubles duos of Madalina Man/Tiffany Pyritz and Filippa Ericson/Kimberley Koerner have also been key to CSU's success over the last two weeks. Man/Pyritz are on a two-match winning streak, while Ericson/Koerner are 4-0 on the year when lining up on court no. 3.

Hampton is 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in Big South play heading into the weekend. The Pirates have dropped conference decisions to Presbyterian and Radford, while also falling to Temple and Old Dominion in non-conference action.

Julia d'Auvergne, Yulia Kapitanova, and Cherise Slocombe all have posted singles wins on the season. The doubles duo of Haley Mullins/Caira Walker have picked up Hampton's lone win.

CSU's home match against Hampton sparks the first of a three-match homestand that includes matches against Campbell (Mar. 4) and Gardner-Webb (Mar. 9).
