Bucs compete on first day of the Mercer Gridiron Classic

MACON, Ga. - Charleston Southern took on the deep field at the Mercer Gridiron Classic on the first day of the match held at the Leroy Peddy Tennis Center.

Overall, CSU's athletes combined to produce 10 singles victories and 10 doubles wins over the first day of the three-day event.

Filippa Ericson and Madalina Man fell in their first-round matchup in the women's doubles Flight A. The CSU duo dropped a 6-4 decision to Chunxi Guo and Tingting Pei in their opening match. The Bucs rallied back in their consolation match against USC Upstate's Valeria Zarama and Victoria Saldh, 7-5.

Nevena Georgieva and Tiffany Pyritz topped Middle Georgia State's Luciana Pereyra and Lara Persiani in doubles Flight A, 6-2, to pick up the win in their lone match of the day.

Florida Southern's Lola Asis and Carolyn Cureton topped CSU's Tyler Kirk and Grace Waldron in double Flight B, 6-2.

Femcke van Rensburg and Yana Morar won both matchups in doubles flight B to advance to the semifinal round in the winner's bracket. The duo topped USC Upstate's Ana Boza and Elin Hellberg, 6-0, in the opener, and then rallied to defeat Mercer's Christie Cesarini and Maeva Roquebert, 6-3.

Michelle Schmitz and Liz Williams split their doubles matches in the Flight A bracket. The duo fell in their first match of the gay to Celine Schepers and Marie Mottet, 6-0. However, the duo rallied back against Kennesaw State's Aspen Jarrett and Lara Mehlsam in the consolation bracket with a 6-4 win.

Filippa Ericson topped both of her opponents in singles play in Flight A to move on following the first day of competition. The CSU senior topped Alba Conejero, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 32, and then followed up with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Selin Devrimci in the 16's round.

Nevena Georgieva dropped her lone singles match on Friday afternoon with the freshman falling 6-2, 6-2 to Reka Szentes.

Tyler Kirk was victorious in straight sets in her lone singles match of the day. The CSU sophomore topped Daniela Nino, 6-0, 6-2, in the Flight C matchup.

Madalina Man split her two singles matches on Flight A on Friday afternoon. Man topped Yi Chi Ma, 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 32. The CSU sophomore dropped a tough three-set decision in the 16's round to Harriett Hamilton, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

Yana Morar split her singles matches as well. The senior athlete fell to Magda Stepnik, 6-2, 6-1, in the 32's, before rallying back to top Elin Hellberg, 6-0, 6-2 in the Flight B consolation bracket.

Tiffany Pyritz swept her way into the quarterfinal round of the Flight B singles bracket. The freshman topped Luciana Pereyra, 6-2, 6-0, in the 32's round. She followed up with a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win over Aspen Jarrett in the round of 16.

Michelle Schmitz split her singles matches in the Flight A bracket. Schmitz topped Maria Jardim in a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. She dropped the following match in the round of 16 to Katie Sidor, 6-0, 6-2.

Femcke van Rensburg split her singles matches on the day in Flight B. Van Rensburg topped Lara Persiani in the first set, 6-4, 7-6 (5). She followed up with a tough loss to Celine Schepers in the round of 16's, 6-0, 6-2.

Grace Waldron fell in her lone singles match of the day in Flight C. The CSU sophomore rallied back after dropping the first set, 6-2, to take the second frame in the tiebreaker, 7-6 (2). However, she was unable to keep pace with Daniela Campo in the third set in suffering the 6-4 loss.

Liz Williams split her singles matches on the day. Williams suffered a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(4) loss in the first round of the Flight B bracket to Maike Naegele. She followed up with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chloe Kabamba in the consolation bracket.
