WTEN Preview: Bucs continue fall schedule with weekend trip to the Mercer Gridiron Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern hits the road this weekend for its first away action of the 2018 fall season. The Buccaneers will be one of 10 women's teams taking on the field at the Mercer Gridiron Classic hosted by Mercer University starting on Friday, October 5, and running through Sunday, October 7.

The Field
CSU will be taking on individuals and doubles teams from Alabama State, East Tennessee State, Florida Southern, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Middle Georgia State, Troy, and USC Upstate over the three-day event.

The Location
All action will take place at the Leroy Peddy Tennis Courts hosted on the campus of Mercer University.

Match Preview
Charleston Southern is back in action for the second time this fall after a strong performance at the season-opening CSU Invitational held on September 21-22 at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex.

The Buccaneers posted eight singles wins and five doubles victories over the two-day event in a field featuring host CSU, College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, and Charlotte.

CSU opened the weekend with four different doubles tandems producing victories over the first two rounds on Friday. The teams of Michelle Schmitz/Liz Williams, Nevena Georgieva/Tiffany Pyritz, Tyler Kirk/Grace Waldron, and Filippa Ericson/Madalina Man all posted wins on the tournament's opening day in Head Coach Anca Dumitrescu's debut at the helm. Ericson, Man, and Williams also posted singles wins for CSU on the first day of the tournament.

The second day also featured a number of CSU highlights paced by Yana Morar's pair of singles wins over the tournament's final two rounds. Schmitz/Williams also picked up their second win of the weekend in doubles play, while Pyritz, Man, and Schmitz added singles wins to their totals in the fall season.

CSU is back in the mix taking on a tough field that includes fellow Big South opponent USC Upstate. Full schedules for the weekend will be posted on R2Sports.com
