Buccaneers top DePaul, 5-2, on Senior Day

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern made sure Senior Day for Sophie Cloessner and Valeria Koussenkova was one to remember as the Buccaneers closed out the 2018 regular season with a 5-2 win over DePaul on Friday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex.

Aided by a trio of forfeits by the Blue Demons, the Bucs (11-7) took the doubles point and singles wins on courts 1 and 4 on their way to topping the Big East opponent.

DePaul (6-9) had four players in its lineup on Friday and surrendered the win on doubles court no. 3. The Blue Demons took the 6-2 win on court no. 1 as Alina Kuzmenkova and Marija Jovicic topped CSU's Cloessner and Madalina Man.

Valeria Koussenkova and Filippa Ericson secured the point for the Bucs on court no. 2 with a 6-4 win over Aspasia Avgeri and Milica Tesic.

The Bucs secured forfeit wins on courts 5 and 6 to take the 3-0 lead heading into the remainder of singles play.

Kimberley Koerner was first off the courts for the Bucs with the junior securing CSU's win with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tesic on court no. 4.

Jovicic put the first point of the match in DePaul's favor with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Koussenkova on court no. 2.

Cloessner secured CSU's fifth point of the day on court no. 1 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Avgeri.

Kuzmenkova closed out the competition on court no. 3 as Ericson was unable to complete her comeback attempt. Ericson dropped the first set, 6-2, before rallying back to even the match with a 7-6 win in the second frame. However, Kuzmenkova took the tiebreaker, 10-5, to secure DePaul's second point of the match.
