Winthrop tops CSU, 6-1, in Bucs' final Big South regular season match

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Michelle Schmitz picked up Charleston Southern's lone point of the day on court no. 4 as the Buccaneers fell on the road to Winthrop, 6-1, on Monday afternoon at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.

Schmitz topped Tayla Van Eck on court no. 4 in singles action for CSU's (10-7, 5-3) lone win of the afternoon as the freshman rallied back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win the second frame, 6-4. She completed the comeback in a tightly contested tiebreaker set, winning 14-12 to take the match.

Winthrop (15-4, 8-0) remained undefeated in conference play as the Eagles swept the doubles point and took five of the six singles matches to pick up their eighth Big South win in 2018.

The no. 50 ranked doubles tandem of Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman opened up doubles play with a 6-1 win over the CSU duo of Sophie Cloessner and Madalina Man on court no. 1. Aida Kelic and Ellie Burns secured the doubles point for WU with a 6-1 win on court no. 3 over Yana Morar and Kimberley Koerner.

The Eagles closed out doubles play on court no. 2 with Alisa Soloveva and Tayla Van Eck's 6-3 win over Valeria Koussenkova and Filippa Ericson.

Kelic put Winthrop up 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Morar on court no. 5. Soloveva followed shortly afterward with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Ericson on court no. 2 to put the edge, 3-0, in favor of Winthrop. Burns secured the match win with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tyler Kirk on court no. 6.

No. 27 Proctor topped Koussenkova in a tough match on court no. 1. Koussenkova fought the nationally-ranked singles opponent to a 7-6 (7-0) first set before falling 6-3 in the second frame. Kauffman topped Koerner in another tough match, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

Schmitz's win over Van Eck closed out the competition.
