Bucs hold off Blue Hose in Big South play

CLINTON, S.C. - Kimberley Koerner helped complete Charleston Southern's comeback winning the third set tiebreaker on court no. 5 on Wednesday afternoon as the Buccaneers remained undefeated in Big South Conference play following their 4-3 win over Presbyterian at the Templeton Tennis Courts.

CSU (7-3, 3-0) dropped two of the three doubles matches before rallying back with singles wins on courts 1, 3, 4, and 5 to top the host Blue Hose (5-6, 0-2) in the Bucs' conference road opener.

Sophie Cloessner and Madalina Man continued their strong play at the top of the doubles lineup with the CSU duo topping Demi Henschel and Samantha Calais, 6-3. The Blue Hose however took the point to go up 1-0 following doubles competition. Caroline Ferrari and Tracy Johnson defeated CSU's Filippa Ericson and Valeria Koussenkova on court no. 2, 6-3. Yana Morar and Kimberley Koerner fell to PC's Brittany Nuttall and Beth Taylor, 6-3, on court no. 3.

The Bucs bounced back in singles play to even the match up before all eyes turned to court no. 5.

Cloessner topped Nuttall on court no. 1, 6-0, 6-1, to bounce back from a rare loss in her last singles match. Man added to CSU's total on court no. 4 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Calais. Ericson was also victorious for the Bucs with a 6-4, 7-5 win on court no. 3.

Johnson and Katie Thompson posted points for Presbyterian in singles play to put the score at 3-3. Johnson topped Koussenkova on court no. 2, 6-1, 6-2. Thompson was victorious over Michelle Schmitz on court no. 6, 6-3, 7-5.

Koerner and Ferrari took each other to the limit on court no. 5 in the deciding match of the day. Ferrari took the opening set, 6-3, but Koerner rallied back to send the match into a third frame with the 6-4 second set win. The duo battled all the way to the tiebreaker in the third set before Koerner was able to string the necessary two points together at the end to secure the 7-6 (8-6) win and secure CSU's win.
