Cloessner earns Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Charleston Southern junior Sophie Cloessner was selected as this week's Big South Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.

Cloessner came through with a pair of huge wins in singles play this week as the Buccaneers went 2-0 with victories over Winthrop and Mercer. The pair of wins extended CSU's winning streak to 14 consecutive matches as the Bucs topped the Eagles and the Bears, 4-3.

The Wetzlar, Germany native broke the 3-3 tie on court no. 2, rallying from a first set deficit after falling 6-1 to Alisa Soloveva in the opening frame. The junior rallied back with a 6-0, 6-2 win over the second and third sets to clinch the match for the Bucs.

Less than 24 hours later, Cloessner was back in a similar situation as she was again the difference-maker on court no. 2 with the junior bouncing back after dropping the first set to rally and take the second and third frames to clinch the CSU win.

Mercer's Katie Sidor took the opening set against Cloessner, 6-3, before the CSU athlete took over the match. Cloessner took the second set, 6-1, and then put the third set away early in closing out the 6-1 victory.

Charleston Southern continues conference play this weekend on Friday afternoon at Liberty. First serve between the Bucs and the Flames is set for 2 p.m.
