Charleston Southern takes top seed in 2014 Big South Women's Tennis Tournament field

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.bigsouthsports.com) – Charleston Southern finished the season with a 9-0 Conference record to garner the Big South Women's Tennis Regular-Season Championship, it was announced today by the League office.

For the first time since 2010, the Buccaneers earned the No. 1 seed in next week's Big South Women's Tennis Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting, which will be contested on the campus of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C.

The Buccaneers ran the table in Big South Conference play this season, posting four shutout 7-0 wins in conference action this season, in earning a #73 national ranking in last week's NCAA poll.

Charleston Southern has been led by junior Yvonne Hubler and senior Alexandra Walters as the duo posted matching 9-0 records in Big South action in singles play on courts no. 2 and 3. Marketa Placha, Nicolin Luecke and Alia Nour all went 8-1 in singles action on the season as well for the Buccaneers to pace the squad under head coach Mike Baker.

CSU will open postseason play on Tuesday morning in the quarterfinal round as the top-seeded Buccaneers will take on the winner of No. 8 Gardner-Webb and No. 9 Longwood with action set to begin at 11:30 a.m.

Winthrop finished second with an 8-1 record and earned the No. 2 seed. Liberty takes the No. 3 seed with a 7-2 record in Conference play, while Campbell finished the Conference season with a 6-3 mark to land the No. 4 spot.  Coastal Carolina finished fifth with a 5-4 record, while Radford garnered the No. 6 slot with a 4-5 Conference mark.  UNC Asheville finished the Big South season with a 3-6 record and will be the No. 7 seed.  Host Gardner-Webb finished with a League mark of 2-7 and will be No. 8, while Longwood finished the Conference slate 1-8 to claim the No. 9 seed.  Presbyterian College's 0-9 record rounds out the field in the No. 10 position. 

The 2014 Big South Women's Tennis Championship begins Monday, April 14 with two matches, and concludes with the Championship contest on Thursday, April 17 in Boiling Springs, N.C.  The Big South's tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.  The Big South Conference Championship schedule is as follows:

Match 1: No. 7 UNC Asheville vs. No. 10 Presbyterian College, 10:00am ET
Match 2: No. 8 Gardner-Webb vs. No. 9 Longwood, 10:00am ET

Tuesday, April 15 – Quarterfinals
Match 3: No. 1 Charleston Southern vs. Winner Match 2, 11:30am ET
Match 4: No. 4 Campbell vs. No. 5 Coastal Carolina, 11:30am ET
Match 5: No. 2 Winthrop vs. Winner Match 1, 2:30pm ET
