Fitzhugh scores first collegiate goal in CSU’s 1-1 tie against Winthrop

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Kelsey Fitzhugh recorded her first collegiate goal and put an end to Charleston Southern's four-game losing streak, contributing CSU's lone point in a 1-1 tie with Winthrop on Thursday night at Eagle Field.

Fitzhugh's first collegiate goal was also the first goal of the match.  Unassisted, the Hilton Head,
S.C. native found the back of the net in the 27th minute with a shot from 10 yards out.  The go-ahead goal was packed with significance for the senior midfielder, who has spent most of her collegiate career fighting through multiple injuries.  The Buccaneers (6-8-1, 2-4-1) failed to capture momentum from the point and were only able to execute half the number of shots put up by Winthrop (3-11-1, 0-6-1), with the Eagles outshooting CSU, 14-7.

Junior goalkeeper Liz Amanda Brown recorded six saves for the match and saw 14 shots from Winthrop's offense, including 10 in the second period and one shot in the first overtime period.

With 15 minutes left in the contest, Winthrop was able to get on the board in the second period with a goal from offensive leader Keely Leising for her fifth of the season.  The freshman forward found the back of the net following a pass from senior defender Macey Bosley.

CSU remains on the road this weekend as the Buccaneers face Longwood University Saturday afternoon.  Kickoff at the Athletic Complex is set for 2 p.m. on the Big South Network.
