Buccaneers shut out at Gardner-Webb, 2-0

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston Southern was held scoreless on Wednesday night as the Buccaneers fell on the road to Gardner-Webb, 2-0.

CSU (6-8, 2-4) lost momentum early in the match when the Runnin' Bulldogs (9-7-2, 6-2) scored a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the game.  Freshman forward Samuelle Grove recorded the first goal in the 2nd minute with a cross to the back of the net.  Just one minute later, GWU's offensive leader Brandi Arey doubled the lead with a header goal off of a corner kick.

While CSU created a greater number of opportunities for themselves to get on the board in the second half, they were unable to capitalize on those efforts with GWU outshooting the Bucs 28-10 and holding the 9-4 advantage on corner kicks.

Big South goal-leader Anna Sells recorded two shots on goal for the match, but was unable to thwart the shutout effort put up by GWU's sophomore goalkeeper Keely Brown (9-7-2).  Erica Gazzani, McKenzie Davis and Jordan Newman also had shots on goal for the contest.

Defensively in the net, Liz Amanda Brown (4-3-0) held GWU scoreless in the second half.  The junior goalkeeper faced 12 shots on goal from an aggressive Runnin' Bulldogs offense and recorded 10 saves for the match.

CSU now turn its attention to the second of three games in a four-day span as they face the Eagles of Winthrop University Thursday.  Kickoff at Eagle Field is set for 6 p.m. on the Big South Network.
