CSU opens play at Briar's Creek Invitational

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. - Charleston Southern sits in 17th place following Monday's opening two rounds of play at the Briar's Creek Invitational. Freshman Daniela Intriago (T-59th) paces the Bucs individually thanks to a second round two-over par 74 at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek.

No. 29 North Carolina, at -11, enjoys a one-stroke lead on No. 40 Campbell for the team lead entering Tuesday's final round. The Tar Heels compiled the effort of the day with a nine-under par second round to move ahead of the Fighting Camels. Texas Tech and No. 23 Illinois are tied for third place at +3.

Individually, UNC's Kelly Whaley (68-67-135 (-9)) carded back-to-back rounds in the 60's to take a two-shot clubhouse lead over Campbell's Desiree Andersson (73-64-137). Andersson set the event record with a blistering eight-under 64 in the second round.

CSU was in 14th place following the morning 18 but struggled in the afternoon to slip to 18th. The Bucs will play alongside Big South Conference rival UNC Asheville and a group of individuals in Tuesday's third round.

Intriago and senior Emelie Flink (T-68th) shared CSU's best score of the day with 74's. Flink had three birdies in her first round while finishing both nine's at +1. Intriago improved her opening round score by five strokes to bump up the leaderboard in the afternoon. The freshmen tallied nine pars on the front nine and drained a pair of birdies on the back side.

Tuesday's final round is slated to begin at 8 a.m. The Bucs will tee of numbers 16, 17 and 18.
