Bucs compete on day one of Babs Steffens Invitational

DeLand, Fla. – Charleston Southern junior Hayley McNeill fired an opening round two-over par 74 and is tied for seventh place after the opening round of the Babs Steffens Invitational, hosted by Stetson University at Victoria Hills Golf Club. CSU is seventh as a team, just 11 shots back of the lead with still 36 holes remaining.

The Bucs carded a total tally of 21-over 309, anchored by McNeill's 74 and senior Bella Johnson's (T-11th) 75. Shelby Thompson posted a 79 and Emelie Flink an 81 for CSU's other counted scores.

St. Leo recorded a ten-over total and is the clubhouse leader, four strokes ahead of Stetson and Boston University in the 11-team field. Xavier and Dartmouth are tied for fourth at +16. Dartmouth's Jamie Susanin and Boston University's Zhangcheng Guo are tied for the individual lead at -1. Twenty-three players are within five shots of the lead. Round two is slated to start Saturday at 11:05 a.m. CSU will tee off beginning at 11:59, and will play alongside Xavier and Seminole State College.

McNeill was one-under on the back nine, her first nine of the day. She dropped in birdies at par-five tenth and the par-four 17th. Johnson, making her second start of the spring season, closed with two birdies over her final four holes. She had a birdie at the par-four ninth to secure an even par front nine.

Thompson and Flink also finished off their rounds with birdies. Flink had consecutive birdies at numbers eight and nine to cap the day on a high note after struggling for much of the day. Milleina Ohara carded an 82 as the other competitor for coach Matt Cram-Smith's Bucs.
