Signing Day Central: Applin, Bucs announce signing class

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Seventh-year Charleston Southern women's basketball head coach Fred Applin and his staff announced their recruiting class Thursday morning. Six dynamic players signed to enroll at CSU and join the Buccaneers for the 2019-20 season.

This season's signing class includes athletes that span from across four states and the District of Columbia – Georgia, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas – and features guards Tori Gittens and Sha'Mya Leigh, combo player Asia Smith as well as forwards Maya Richards and Kianni Westbrook and center Tyra Wright.

"We are so excited about this year's recruiting class. My staff and I were able to go out and add players that fill immediate needs for next year," Applin said. "We signed six talented players that represent everything we look for in a student-athlete."

Applin added, "They add a lot of different elements for us. They're all very talented players and they fit perfectly to our style of basketball."

Tori Gittens

Guard | Sherman, Texas | Gunter High School | Nike Proskills 17U

  • Has played 75 career games and scored 1,300 points entering her senior season
  • Through three seasons has averaged 17.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.4 steals, 2.0 assists and 3.3 blocks
  • As a junior, she averaged 25.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 5.3 steals and 2.5 blocks
  • District 10 – 3A Fist Team All-District, Academic All-District as a freshman
  • District 9 – 3A Offensive MVP, Academic All-District as a sophomore
  • Academic All-District. Pottsboro Invitational All-Tournament as a junior
  • Classic All-Tournament three years in-a-row
  • A four-sport athlete who also competed on the Track and Field, Cross Country and Volleyball teams at Gunter High School
  • Academic All-State in Track & Field; Academic All-District in Volleyball
  • Daughter of Greg and Toni Gittens
  • Plans to major in Psychology and minor in Kinesiology




Sha'Mya Leigh

Guard | Dayton, Ohio | Trotwood-Madison High School | Cincinnati's Finest

  • In 20 games last season Sha'Mya averaged 16.1 points, 3.8 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.7 rebounds per game
  • Played in the inaugural Bill Moss Memorial Underclass All-Star Game as part of the Division 1-2 South squad
  • Was named to the All-Area and All-Southwest District Division I Honorable Mention Team after the 2016-17 season
  • Her uncle Rodney Smith was an athlete at Northeastern in Sterling, Colorado
  • Cousin Ray Springer was an athlete at the University of Dayton.


Maya Richards

Forward | Johns Creek, Ga. | Northview High School | Atlanta Cagers

  • Enters her third season as a starter at Northview High School
  • Has averaged 9.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.2 assists per game thus far
  • Four-year varsity basketball athlete
  • Named Most Improved Player and earned All-Region Second Team in 2016-17
  • All-Region Second Team and Co-Captain 2017-18
  • Co-Captain again this season
  • Part of varsity squad that won 6-A Region Championship in 2016-17 and 2017-18
  • Made state Final Four both seasons as well
  • Honor Roll member in Spring 2018
  • Two-sport athlete who placed 6th in her region in Shot Put in 2018
  • Her cousin Dr. Nikisha Richards played basketball at LeMoyne-Owen College from 2001-04
  • Daughter of Maclus and Pat Richards
  • Plans to major in Business



Asia Smith

Guard/Forward | Washington, D.C. | Myrtle Beach High School | Greensboro Lady Gators

  • Enters her second season starting at Myrtle Beach High School
  • Averaged 11.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.1 blocks and 2.5 steals per contest last season as a junior
  • Named Defensive Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year last season
  • Earned All-Region First Team, All-Hoopzone and Jaguar Classic All-Tournament First Team honors and was named Mammy's Kitchen Athlete of the Week
  • Also played soccer and was named Defensive Player of the Year earning All-Conference honors in 2016 and 2017
  • Her uncle Adam Smith played football at Catawba
  • Daughter of Dottie Smith
  • Plans to major in Kinesiology and minor in Psychology



Kianni Westbrook

Forward | Augusta, Ga. | Burke County High School | Georgia Sting

  • Enters her third season as a starter at Burke County High School having earned three letters already
  • Has averaged 14 points per game over the past two seasons
  • Part of a Burke County squad that finished the season as Region 3AAA Champions and state semifinalists in 2016-17
  • Westbrook was named Most Improved and made Second Team All-Region
  • In 2017-18 she led the team to Region 3AAA Championship and was named to the North South Junior All-Star Team
  • Two-sport athlete who also was the top female hurdler and top field event athlete
  • Family members Jermaine Brooks was an athlete at Savannah State; Shaquille Cook played at Miles College and Ashleigh Dutler was an athlete at South Carolina State and Augusta State.
  • Daughter of Tresa Ruffin
  • Plans to major in sports medicine



Tyra Wright

Center | Morrison, Tenn. | Warren County High School | East Tennessee Pyro

  • Two-year starter entering her senior season at Warren County High School
  • Shot 47% from the floor as a sophomore averaging 7 points and 7 rebounds per game
  • Followed with a 46% mark as a junior while increasing her scoring to 12 points and rebounding to 8 boards per game. Also shot 74.4% from the free throw line
  • Honorable Mention student-athlete as a sophomore
  • An All-District and All-Tournament honoree as a junior
  • Daughter of Casey McAfee and Dwight Wright
  • Plans to major in Psychology
