CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern is going dancing as the Buccaneers accepted a bid in the Women's Basketball Invitational on Monday night. The Bucs will host a first round match-up against UNCG on Thursday night in the Buccaneer Field House with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
The Bucs (18-13) make their third appearance in the WBI and first under Head Coach Fred Applin. CSU previously went to the tournament in both the 2010 and the 2012 seasons under former head coach Julie Goodenough.
Applin was pleased with the committee's selection of the Bucs in the postseason field.
"We are excited to be able to extend our season and we are honored that the Women's Basketball Invitational committee selected Charleston Southern University to play in the tournament," Applin said. "It's a great opportunity for our players."
This will be the second time in program history the Buccaneers will host a WBI game. Previously, CSU hosted top-seed Appalachian State in the Buc Dome in 2010. The Bucs fell to the Mountaineers in the contest, 62-47.
CSU enters the postseason looking to continue one of the most successful seasons in program history with the Bucs tying the school record for overall wins with 18, while setting the program mark for Big South Conference wins with 11.
The Bucs advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 Big South Conference Women's Basketball Championships this past week with a win over tournament host Liberty, before falling to top-seed Radford.
UNCG had a similar journey to the postseason with the Spartans posting a 17-14 overall record and 7-7 mark in Southern Conference play. UNCG topped Furman in the SoCon Tournament quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Chattanooga in the semifinal round.
The second round 2017 WBI games will be played March 18, 19 or 20 on campus sites with the semifinals set for March 22 or 23. The 2017 Championship game will be played on March 25 or 26 on a campus site. Please check www.womensbasketballinvitational.com for more details or follow @PostseasonWBI on Twitter.
