CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern Head Women's Basketball Coach Fred Applin announced the promotion of Assistant Coach Jill Poe to Associate Head Coach on Tuesday morning. Poe is in her third year with the CSU Women's Basketball team and joined the program after serving two seasons as assistant coach at East Carolina, where she worked alongside Applin.
"I am thrilled to name Coach Jill Poe as the Associate Head Coach here at CSU," Appin said. "I've been fortunate to build a relationship with Coach Poe over the years, and I have seen firsthand that her love for CSU Women's Basketball and her passion for coaching student-athletes is second-to-none. She has played a vital role in all aspects of our women's basketball program."
Coach Applin says, under the assistance of Poe, he's witnessed the program grow from both a talent and academic standpoint.
"Coach Poe has exceeded all expectations since her arrival three years ago," Applin added. "From our academic success, to on-the-court coaching, to recruiting. Her hard work and loyalty to our program make her an excellent coach and mentor for our players."
Poe held an associate head coach and recruiting coordinator role at the University of Maine during the 2011-12 season. She owns 21 years of experience at the Division I level as an assistant and head coach, with an emphasis on developing post players. She made two trips to the NCAA tournament as a head coach and has been part of the WNIT two times as an assistant.
"I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and want to thank Coach Applin and the administration for their continued support," Poe said.
In two decades of coaching, Poe has coached at least one all-conference post player at every institution in which she has worked.
"I think it's an appropriate promotion for Coach Poe," Applin said. "From day one, we talked about my vision for the CSU women's program and where I wanted to be in the future. We are headed in the right direction and I am excited to see this program continue to grow."
Additionally, Poe has coached seven players who have gone on to play professionally in Korie Hlede and Candace Futrell of the WBNA, as well as Shiri Sharon, Selma Delibasic, Beth Swink, Martha White and Samantha Baronowski, who have played in the European League.
"I am blessed to work with an amazing group of young ladies that truly embody our program's values both on and off the court," Poe added. "I look forward to continuing to help Coach Applin and our staff move this program forward."
