CHARLESTON, S.C. - Former Charleston Southern forward Lakeitha Alston has signed a professional contract with the CAFFE' MOAK LUXOL basketball team in the Malta-Peugeot League. Alston, a 2013 Charleston Southern graduate, heads overseas to begin training with the team in late September.
"Honestly, it's a dream come true," Alston said. "It's an awesome opportunity that is almost like a once-in-a-lifetime chance. This is a great step for my future and a fun, great experience to do something that I love. I'm excited about the chance to grow, and continue to develop my skills."
Alston was one of the top players in the Big South Conference during her time with the Buccaneers, culminating in earning All-Conference Second Team laurels in her senior year after averaging 15.8 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in 2012-13.
Additionally, Alston made her mark on the Charleston Southern record books, finishing up fourth all-time with 1,473 career points, and finished in the top 10 all-time in field goals made, field goals attempted, free throws made, free throws attempted, rebounds, and blocked shots. She also became the program's all-time leader in games played, lining up in 121 career contests in the CSU Blue and Gold.
"I am excited for Lakeitha," said CSU head coach Fred Applin. "She was a very good player for Charleston Southern and she strived hard to achieve her goals. I look forward to seeing her continue to succeed at the next level."
Alston credits her experience at Charleston Southern in playing a key role in her achieving her dream to play overseas.
"Being at CSU set me up completely and is a huge part of where I am right now," Alston commented. "I don't think I'd be in the position I am to play professionally without the coaches and teammates here at CSU. The intensity of the practices and the intensity of the games, my teammates and coaches helped influence me and shape me into the player that I am today."
Alston joins a talented squad in CAFFE' MOAK LUXOL, as the defending 2014 champions return a strong cast to their roster. The season begins in October, while the squad will look to reprise their title run when playoffs start in May 2015.
The change in venue and location are exciting for Alston as she looks forward to the next step of her career.
"Malta is very beautiful and I'm most looking forward to the experience over there," said Alston. "It has a very rich culture and a great location, and it's just different from what I'm used to. I'm excited about the opportunity and ready to see what happens."
