No. 5 Buccaneers fall to No. 3 Campbell in elimination game at Big South Softball Championships

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - No. 5 Charleston Southern was unable to overcome a strong pitching effort in the circle as the Buccaneers fell to No. 3 Campbell in an elimination game on the first day of the 2019 Big South Softball Championships, 6-0.

The Bucs (18-37) were limited to two hits in the contest with Jade Gandara's fourth-inning double and Brooklynn Brewington's two-out sixth-inning single CSU's lone base knocks in the game.

Campbell's Megan Richards (15-12) went the distance in the complete game effort walking two and striking out five in the win. The Camels (26-27) advance to the second day of the conference championships and will play a to-be-determined opponent tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Caitlyn Emberson and SeaEnna Satcher both drew walks for the Bucs in their final game of the 2019 season to join Brewington and Gandara on base.

Arizona Pilgrim (10-21) suffered the loss after going 1.1 innings in relief and surrendering two runs on two hits. Alyssa Heinrich added 0.2 innings in a relief effort, while Holly Clark went 4.0 innings overall as the junior started the game and went the first two innings, before closing out the final two frames in the contest.

Bri Bryant sparked the Campbell offense with a three-hit day, including a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Claudia Ware and Kayla Fredendall added multi-hit games in the win.

How They Scored/Key Situations

  • Both pitching staffs were solid through the first three innings allowing a combined two runners on base over the first 18 outs of the game.
  • Gandara put CSU's first hit on the board in the top of the fourth inning as the senior drilled the ball to right center field for the stand-up double.
  • Campbell cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Camels took advantage of a bases-loaded, one-out situation to push across two runs.
  • Megan Mozingo's RBI single opened the scoring, while Christa Hall drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Camels ahead 2-0 after four innings.
  • The Camels struck for three more runs in the fifth as Fredendall's two-run single doubles the Campbell advantage, while Mozingo's fielder's choice scored Kynadi Tipler to put CU ahead 5-0.
  • Bryant capped the scoring in the sixth inning with a solo home run to right center.
  • The Bucs put runners on base in both the sixth and seventh frames thanks to Brewington's single and Emberson's walk, but CSU was unable to string together a rally to fight their way back into the game.
