CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern hits the road this weekend as the Buccaneers continue their stretch away from the CSU Softball Field this weekend. The Bucs will take part in the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge starting on Saturday at the University of North Florida, while Sunday's action will be hosted by Jacksonville University.
CSU will be looking to snap a skid this weekend as the Buccaneers enter the weekend having fallen in 14 of their last 15 games, including a midweek loss this past Wednesday to College of Charleston.
Annie Bakenhus' .324 batting average and a team-high 22 hits pace the Buccaneers' offense on the season. The senior outfielder leads the team with 22 hits and 15 runs scored while hitting leadoff atop the CSU lineup.
Jade Gandara made her way back into the lineup after a nine-game injury hiatus. The senior first baseman is hitting .316 with three doubles and a team-high 13 RBI. Caitlyn Emberson has added a team-high 13 walks and three home runs.
The JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge is CSU's final tournament prior to preparing for Big South Conference play. The Bucs will host a midweek contest against N.C. State on Tuesday before taking on Radford in the conference opener on March 15-16.
Scouting Cleveland State
Cleveland State enters the weekend with a 3-10 overall record heading into the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge. The Vikings have posted wins over Wagner, Quinnipiac, and Robert Morris over the first three weekends of the season.
Charleston Southern marks the lone Big South team the Vikings will face this season. Cleveland State fell to former Big South rival Liberty last weekend at the Liberty Spring Classic.
Kelly Hysong paces the Cleveland State lineup with a team-best .353 batting average to go with 18 hits, five doubles, and four home runs. She's added 12 RBI from the plate to also lead the team. Alyssa Rose (.314) and Riley Ries (.308) are also hitting over .300 on the season.
Hanna Griffin is the ace in the circle this season with a 3-4 record to go with a 4.81 ERA in 39.1 innings. Hysong and Rose have also combined for 12 appearances in Cleveland State's 13 games on the season.
Scouting North Florida
North Florida enters the weekend with an 8-6 overall record on the year and a 5-1 mark at home in 2019. The Ospreys boast wins over Colgate, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, CofC, Albany, Georgetown, Manhattan, and Holy Cross on the year.
CSU is the lone Big South opponent North Florida will face in the 2019 season.
Dominica Cocuzza leads the team with a .561 batting average from the plate to go with a team-high 23 hits and 15 RBI. Navia Penrod is hitting .295 from the plate with a trio of doubles and 14 runs scored.
Morgan Blourne leads four pitchers in the circle with a team-best 2.60 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched. She boasts a 21:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the season with six starts and three complete games. Morgan Clausen (2.76 ERA) and Kayla Cruz (2.90 ERA) are also among the pitching leaders this season.
Georgetown enters the weekend with a 5-12 overall record boasting wins over George Washington, Utah Valley, Manhattan, Harvard, and Brown. The Hoyas close out the weekend with the contest against Charleston Southern at JU.
Georgetown is currently 0-1 on the season against Big South opponents having previously fallen to Gardner-Webb on February 9, 10-2.
Savannah Jones and Noelle Holiday lead the offense with matching .383 batting averages on the season. Jones has a trio of triples and 14 runs scored, while Holiday boasts three home runs and 15 RBI on the year. Alexa Dolby is the leader on the bases paths with six stolen bases.
Katie Vannicola is the team leader with 43.0 innings pitched in 12 appearances. London Diller boasts a 7.41 ERA and six starts to go with three complete games on the season.
Jacksonville is 6-10 overall in the season heading into the weekend. The Dolphins took a pair of early wins over Providence and UMass Lowell and added victories over South Dakota State, CofC, Harvard, and Radford this season.
JU is 1-0 against Big South opponents this season with their 5-2 win over the Highlanders. The Dolphins will also take on Presbyterian on Friday afternoon on the first day of the tournament.
Kassidy Cross leads the team with a .348 batting average with 16 hits and three doubles on the year. Hannah Roberts paces JU with five home runs and 12 RBI, while Makenzie Buss is the team leader with six stolen bases.
Alyssa Bilodeau paces the Dolphins in the circle with a team-best 12 appearances and eight starts over 61.0 innings. She's posted a 2.52 ERA with a 55:14 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Seana Mora and Haley Holloway have combined for 13 appearances and eight starts.
