Bucs fall in Palmetto State showdown Wednesday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coastal Carolina used three shutdown innings from Kaitlin Beasley-Polko and a late three-run home run to sink Charleston Southern Wednesday afternoon 6-2 from CSU Softball Field.

Both CSU (3-4) and Coastal Carolina (5-1) started the game with a bang scoring four combined runs, two of them earned. The Chanticleers struck first in the opening frame after loading the bases and cashing-in on an infield single followed by a throwing error.

CSU was quick to answer in the bottom half of the frame after Annie Bakenhus led off with a single and Brooklynn Brewington reached on an error. The Bucs' career RBI leader Jade Gandara did what she does best bringing home Bakenhus and Brewington with a two-run single down the right field line.

However, the Chanticleers' pitching duo of Ashley Guillette and Beasley-Polko shut down the CSU offense the rest of the way holding the Bucs to just two more hits and 0 runs over the final six frames. Offensively, Coastal Carolina tacked on an unearned run in the third for a 3-2 lead before a three-run home run to straightaway center field in the top of the seventh extended the margin to 6-2 where it finished.

CSU did have a chance with the bases loaded in the bottom of the bottom of the third, but couldn't push across a run and was unable to create another opportunity down the stretch.

How It Happened

  • Both Coastal and CSU put two runs on the board in the opening frame as the defenses committed two costly errors allowing two unearned runs to score.
  • Coastal loaded the bases in the top of the frame and it looked like CSU would get out of it, but an infield single and throwing error pushed across two Chanticleer runs.
  • CSU answered with a single, Coastal error then Jade Gandara two-run single to knot it up.
  • After CSU responded, Ashley Guillette shutdown the Bucs over the next three frames before Kaitlin Beasley-Polko shut the door over the final three innings.
  • Coastal grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning on another CSU error and held on before a three-run blast from Courtney Dean extended the Chanticleer lead to 6-2, where it would stand over the home half of the seventh.

News and Notes

  • CSU's career RBI leader Jade Gandara tacked onto that record with her two-RBI single, providing the lone Buccaneer runs on the day.
  • Gandara has multiple RBI's in four contests this season and leads the Bucs with 10 in the 2019 campaign.
  • Each of the first three CSU hitters – Bakenhus, Brewington and Gandara, as well as Meghan Gagliano accounted for all four of CSU's hits on the day.
  • Senior righty Arizona Pilgrim tossed another complete game effort as three of her six runs surrendered were earned while striking out six and tossing 152 pitches.
  • The Bucs committed a season-high five errors in the loss as three of the Chanticleers' runs were earned.
