HONOLULU, Hawaii – Charleston Southern was topped by Hawaii on the first day of the Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling, falling to the Rainbow Wahines, 5-3, on Wednesday night.
Jade Gandara and Stevi Johnson led the Buccaneers at the plate with two hits each, combining for four of CSU's five hits. Gandara knocked in all three of CSU's runs and recorded the Bucs' only double of the contest.
Hawaii was led by the strong pitching of Dana Thomsen (4-2) in the circle, with the junior recording eight strikeouts through five innings. Reliever Brittany Hitchcock entered the game in the top of the sixth and added two more to close out the Rainbow Wahines' win.
Hawaii put a pair runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Nicole Lopez connected on a deep ball to right center to knock in two runs. The Rainbow Wahines added another run in the bottom of the second after Danielle Garcielita connected for a single down the left field line, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. A hit up the middle from Sarah Muzik got the run across to give Hawaii the 3-0 advantage after two innings.
Johnson got things started for the Bucs in the top of the third with a two-out single up the middle. Gandara brought in the run with a hit to center field, but was thrown out at second to end the rally. Hawaii added another run in the bottom of the frame, and a sacrifice fly from Lopez in the fourth gave the Rainbow Wahines the 5-1 lead with three innings left to play.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Johnson walked and Caitlyn Emberson was hit by a pitch to put CSU runners on first and second with Gandara at the plate. The sophomore came up big again and connected on a deep double to left center to score both runs and put a CSU comeback within reach.
The Bucs were held hitless in the sixth, and Johnson once again came to the plate with two outs in CSU's final frame. The senior connected on another single up the middle for her second hit of the game, but was left stranded on first as a pop-up ended the game.
CSU now turns its attention to Thursday afternoon as they take on Toledo in day two of the Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling tournament. First pitch between the Bucs and the Rockets is set for 6:00 p.m. EST.
