Bucs picked third in the men's, fifth in the women's as Big South announces Outdoor Track & Field preseason polls

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Charleston Southern's men's track & field team was selected third overall in the 2018 Big South Outdoor Track & Field preseason poll, while the women's team was selected fifth overall by the league's head coaches, the conference office announced on Wednesday morning.

CSU's men's team enters the outdoor season this weekend after posting a third-place result at the 2018 Big South Indoor Championships. The Bucs had multiple athletes finish in the top three on multiple events on their way to posting 92 points in the team rankings.

The women's team placed fifth overall at the 2018 Big South Indoor Championships paced by strong performances in the 60m dash, weight throw, triple jump, and pentathlon. The Bucs enter the outdoor season this weekend at home at the CSU Spring Break Invitational.

In the men's voting, the Flames received all seven first-place votes and the 49 possible points in the poll, ahead of the second-place Campbell, who garnered all seven second-place votes and 42 points. 

Charleston Southern claimed third with 32 points, just ahead of High Point, which finished fourth in the voting with 31 points.  Winthrop was fifth in the preseason standings with 18 points, followed by Gardner-Webb in sixth at 17 points.  UNC Asheville landed in the seventh and final position at seven points.

On the women's side, the three-time defending Women's Outdoor Track & Field champion Lady Flames, which won their 16th overall championship last year, claimed the top spot in the poll with all eight first-place votes and the 64 possible points. 

Campbell was second to the Lady Flames with 53 points, followed by High Point in third with 51 points.  Radford claimed fourth-place with 37 points, just ahead of fifth-place Charleston Southern (34 points).  Gardner-Webb landed in sixth (22 points), followed by Winthrop (seventh – 19 points) and UNC Asheville (eighth – 8 points).

The 2018 Big South outdoor track & field season began this past weekend, and the Conference Championship meet is slated for May 9-11 at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University in High Point, N.C.  Below are the preseason polls.
