CHARLESTON, S.C. - After a week off following the Commodore Invitational, Charleston Southern's indoor track and field teams are back in action this weekend at the VMI Team Challenge hosted in Lexington, Va. at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
It marks the second consecutive weekend VMI has hosted an indoor meet with the Keydets hosting a two-day event this past weekend. Two of this past week's Big South Indoor Athletes of the Week competed at VMI this past weekend with Liberty's Dasi Larson (women's field) and Jovaine Atkinson (men's track) receiving honors.
The Bucs join six other schools for the one-day event that begins on Saturday morning. The field features S.C. State, East Tennessee State, Western Carolina, The Citadel, High Point, and Charleston Southern, as well as host VMI.
Five different CSU indoor track and field records fell in the Buccaneers' last meet as the men's 4000m distance medley relay, the men's 3000m, the men's shot put, the men's mile, and the women's mile records all went down at the Commodore Invitational.
The Bucs' (A) team of Andrew Akright, Josiah Scarlett, Jeryck Wilson, and Jaymee Domoney placed second in the field in the men's 4000m distance medley relay for CSU's lone podium finish on the first day. The quartet finished the race in 10:03.02, and in the process established a new CSU school record eclipsing the previous mark by nearly 20 seconds.
Less than 24 hours later, Georgina Russell topped CSU alum Adrienne Cuff's mark set in 2013 at the Big South Championships. Russell completed the mile in 4:59.54, the first sub-five minute mile in CSU indoor history to top Cuff's mark of 5:04.39. The time put her ninth in the field on the day.
Freshman Jaymee Domoney kept the CSU distance records coming in the men's mile run. The Salisbury, England native shattered the mark set by Shaun Bisson (4:18.74) in 2010 by over four seconds as Domoney finished fifth among the field with a time of 4:14.70.
Ryan Spiecha improved on his school record mark in the shot put as the sophomore broke the record set last season at the Clemson Invitational. His throw of 15.74m topped his previous record by nearly six centimeters and placed him fourth among the field in Nashville.
Fearghal Curtin and Jeryck Wilson wrapped up the afternoon in record-setting fashion as the duo both broke the previous school record in the 3000m race. Curtin (8:17.06) finished third overall in the field, while Wilson (8:27.50) placed sixth overall as the duo both snapped the previous mark set by Michael Bailey (8:29.36) set in the 2011 Big South Championships.
Saturday's field events start with the men's weight throw at 11:30 a.m., while the women's 60m dash preliminaries open the track events for the day. The final scheduled event in field is the men's high jump set for 2:45 p.m. The men's DMR concludes the track events with start time set for 4:10 p.m.
